Part-time Tutor/ACES Program

About ACES

The ACES Program began in September of 2001, as an alternative for bright, hardworking students whose first language is not English. This includes immigrant and international students looking for a small, private college practice. ACES students have tested out of traditional high school ESL coursework and/or scored well within the range of fluency in language proficiency exams such as Duolingo, IELTS, and TOEFL. ACES students are often on the Dean’s List, and many of our recent ACES graduates have been accepted to medical schools, law schools, Ivy League PhD programs, MBA and CPA programs, Education Masters Programs, and many more. In addition to offering a unique, theme-located learning curriculum, the ACES program also provides support in the form of a tutoring center which operates Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m..

Part-time Tutor Expectations

   » Hold one-on-one sessions with undergraduate EAL (English as an Additional Language) students
   » Keep accurate session records
   » Provide written feedback on student writing as needed
   » Lead study groups and expertise workshops as needed
   » Assist with administrative tasks related to advisement, communications to students, and event coordination, when not tutoring students

Requirements

   » Ideal candidates will have teaching practice at the college level (in ENG field: writing or literature)
   » Ideal candidates should be adept in discussing academic work in a variety of humanities disciplines
   » expertise of MLA, APA, Chicago citation standards
   » capability to advise students towards developing good study habits (time management, note taking, organization, test preparation)
   » Available to work 3-5-hour shifts between the hours of 9am-5pm, 15-20 hours/week

Qualifications

A Master’s degree in English Literature, Composition and Rhetoric or a related field is preferred. Previous practice teaching/tutoring non-native speakers is desirable.

Pay rate : $36 per hour for those with a master's degree; $28 per hour for those with a bachelor's degree
