Job detail
The School of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University (CM-A) is seeking candidates for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of adjunct or Associate Professor in Architectural Design.
At CM-A, we believe that design education, research, and creative practice are in direct dialogue with society’s evolving concerns and must critically examine its current paradigms while striving for creativity. Building on the school's established reputation and skills in sustaincapability, urbanism, and computation, Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture is focused on covering three imminent challenges facing society: a) the profound impact of climate change and the function architecture plays in it; b) the implication of artificial intelligence to human agency; and c) the imperative of social justice and the need for greater equity, inclusion, and intersectionality in the construction of our built environment.
This position aligns with the core missions of the school's NAAB-accredited Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) and Master of Architecture (M.Arch) programs – to train architects in the creative and professional practice of architecture leading to licensure. We are pursuing candidates with interest and practice in comprehensive building design who can promote and expand innovative professional design practices.
Responsibilities
Teaching: Teaching responsibilities will primarily focus on architectural design related to building practices and techniques, including topics such as construction systems, assembly/disassembly, building and systems integration, comprehensive design, high-performance systems, building envelope, building performance simulation, life-safety, codes and standards required for professional practice while covering the challenges of climate change, equity and the function of technology through the agency of design. The function will involve teaching a range of design studios for the NAAB-accredited B.Arch and M.Arch programs, including vertically integrated option studios, and courses related to the candidate's core research. The candidate shall demonstrate their approach to teaching and pedagogy through examples of architectural design, research, and/or professional practice work examples.
Creative Practice, Research, and Scholarship: We welcome creative practice, research, and scholarship with a focus on integrative architectural design. Areas of focus may include but not be limited to creative strategies of decarbonization through building materials and assembly, enclosure/ envelope design, material circularity, and/or building performance reflective of diverse, multicultural contexts, including indigenous, non-western and/or practices of the Global South. The candidates are to articulate an actionable research agenda and/or scholarly practice that contributes to architectural discourse.
Service & Mentoring: This position will also provide academic and professional advising support for the B.A., B.Arch, and M.Arch programs. This will include constructing significant connections between the pedagogy of the school and practice within the profession. Additional service responsibilities to the university will be determined annually by the Head of the school.
