Job Summary The Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Faculty Research adjunct position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

The individual in this position will play a major function in directing and executing scientific research on hops in the laboratory of Professor Steve Strauss (steve.strauss@oregonstate.edu). Scientific research will include transformation and gene-editing method development, and implementation of a transformation/editing pipeline, for hops. The goal of this research in the laboratory is improved and environmentally accepted methods for breeding, genetic engineering, and gene editing in hops used for medicinal compounds and beer brewing.

Key Responsibilities 50%: Design and carry out hop transformation experiments for gene-editing at MLO and related disease resistance loci.

25% : Innovate and test new means for gene editing and transformation in hop, including to create and modify significant genetic constructs.

15%: Analyze data, present reports, prepare and deliver conference talks, author/co-author manuscripts, help to write grant proposals, and prepare posters/presentations for conferences. Work with the manager to ensure research findings are available and accessible to the public.

5%: Assist lab manager with lab organization and management, which will include direction/supervision of minors, students, and technicians. Interact respectfully with all team members and contribute to an safe, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

5%: Read and analyze scientific and informatic literature.
Drive Oregon State University (OSU) Motor Pool, College/University-owned, and/or personal vehicles to field sites and greenhouses as dictated by research needs.

What You Will Need
   » MS in plant biotechnology or a closely related field.
   » practice in plant tissue culture, including media preparation and asceptic culture.
   » practice in Agrobacterium culture and use for plant transformation
   » practice in molecular biology (including PCR methods and plasmid construction).
   » practice in statistical, bioinformatic, and connected graphical analysis of data.
   » Excellent teamwork in the form of responsible, timely, and congenial cooperation and communication with project staff and principal investigators (PIs) orally and in writing.
   » Excellent verbal and written communication expertise in English.
   » capability to clearly communicate scientific concepts, findings, and results for diverse audiences.
   » Demonstrated capability to contribute to an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming workplace environment for individuals with a range of different backgrounds, identities, perspectives, and/or life practices.
   » capability to problem solve and think creatively.
   » broad practice, spanning at least three years, of facility with computer and online tools, with emphasis on spreadsheets, graphic display of information, online searches of the scientific literature, Powerpoint, and Microsoft Word.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
