Position Summary Information

Job Summary/Basic Function: About the function:

Responsibilities include servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing commercial industrial air handlers, fan coil units, VAV boxes, recirculation pumps, residential package units, gas-fired boilers, ice machines, and other connected equipment. This position is at the adjunct level, but the employee will be required to execute less technical tasks independently. Employees are reminded that they represent both the department and the university and are expected to maintain a clean, neat and professional appearance while on duty. The candidate will routinely work with other crafts and will be required to monitor contracted work and provide training to subordinate employees. This position is considered as essential, and employees will be required to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to emergency situations or natural disasters. These specialists work under the direct supervision of the HVAC/R manager, in the Facilities Maintenance department.

What You'll Do - Position tasks

   » Adequate expertise of the HVAC trade and theory of HVAC systems.
   » Materials, methods and tools used in the operation and repair of HVAC systems
   » capability to troubleshoot and maintain gas-fired boilers, and connected equipment
   » expertise of central plant operations, to include commercial chillers and connected equipment
   » Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and be able to understand and follow oral and written directions.
   » Have expertise in electrical and plumbing, necessary to diagnose and repair HVAC related equipment
   » Have a working expertise of Microsoft Office and email applications.
   » Maintain flexibility and be available for duty during short-notice or urgent situations.
   » Work cooperatively with others and maintain excellent customer service.
   » Work independently with little direction, meeting schedules and timelines.

Key Competencies:

   » Broad expertise in repairing and servicing HVAC and connected equipment.
   » Some practice in electrical and plumbing, necessary to adequately diagnose/repair HVAC related equipment is expected.
   » expertise of Microsoft Office and email applications.
   » practice working with a Computerized Maintenance Management System.
   » Employees are expected to lead by example, demonstrating the highest level of ethics.
   » Employees are expected to work together to meet the needs of the department and university, by providing exemplary customer service to the staff, faculty and students.
Physical Requirements:
   » Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work.
   » Some combination of climbing and balancing, to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crawling, working at heights and working in confined spaces.
   » May involve the lifting of moderately heavy objects, up to 45 pounds.
   » Requires a full range of physical motion to operate manual/electrically powered tools.

Minimum Appropriate qualifications:
   » An associate degree or completion of a formal technical training program within the field of HVAC or related field.
   » A high school diploma or GED.
   » Three (3) years of job-related practice in the HVAC career field.
   » practice in a construction industry trade, or building maintenance in an apartment complex, school or similar setting.

Certification(s) Required:

   » Certification in a technical training program within the field of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.
   » A valid Texas driver's license.
