Primary Purpose of Department The Department of Languages, Cultures and Translation engages in innovative research and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels to develop students' language and communication skills, cultural expertise, intercultural competency, literacy, and critical thinking in order to prepare its graduates for participation in an increasingly global and multilingual society. We offer an MA in Spanish with a concentration in Language, Literature and Culture and a concentration in Applied Language; undergraduate majors and minors in French, German, Japanese and Spanish; additional minors in Arabic, Chinese, Francophone Studies, and Italian; a graduate and undergraduate Certificate in Translating (Spanish, French, German, Japanese); a Certificate in Business Language; online courses via the University of North Carolina Language Exchange; and a variety of study abroad practices. The Department boasts a modern Language Resource Center, which provides cutting-edge technology for language pedagogy, and a diverse faculty from around the world who offer more than 200 courses to more than 4,000 students annually.

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development - Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the expertise base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member's discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new expertise and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing expertise, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential tasks and Responsibilities Required qualifications . (1) A Ph.D. in Spanish, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field with a specialization in heritage language education; (2) additional research skills in second language learning and acquisition, teacher training and language program development, language learning and technology, language assessment, or a related field; (3) an active research agenda with publications in heritage language education and potential for external funding; and (4) an capability to teach courses in Spanish at all levels, in particular undergraduate courses for Spanish for Heritage language learners, along with upper- level and graduate courses taught within the candidate's areas of specialization. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated practice teaching Spanish courses for heritage speakers. prosperous candidates will be expected to teach and develop graduate and undergraduate courses for online and face-to-face delivery.

tasks will include undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, and service to the department, college, and university. We seek scholars whose research foci complement existing departmental strengths in translation and interpreting, literary and cultural studies, language pedagogy, applied and sociolinguistics.

Minimum practice/Education UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and practice The ideal candidate will demonstrate a availability to teach both graduate and undergraduate classes, to participate in program building, and to contribute to the department's programming in community outreach and study abroad; a potential to secure appropriate external funding; and the potential to make dynamic, innovative contributions to the intellectual mission of the Spanish program with special emphasis on Heritage Language education.
