Organizational Unit Overview The primary purpose of the Police Department is to support the University's core mission of teaching, research, and public service by providing comprehensive and professional police services. The Department's staff protects and serves the University community by enforcing the laws of North Carolina, policies of the University, preserving and optimizing resources and by maintaining an environment that fosters higher education and community-oriented service.

Job tasks The ECU Police Department is seeking agent candidates to prevent and suppress crime; protect life and property by effecting arrest, forcible if necessary; conduct safety and crime avoidance programs; recognize, identify, and mitigate safety concerns and issues; pursue fleeing suspects; perform rescue operations; prepare reports; determine when there is reasonable suspicion to detain; and operate law enforcement vehicle, day and night. The employee will be expected to communicate effectively - both orally and in writing; perform tasks with a strong emphasis on community policing and customer service; and maintain all certifications and requirements established by the Department. agents are empowered with full law enforcement authority and are charged with the responsibility of the apprehension of criminal offenders, criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, and warrant/summons service. agents have jurisdiction on all property that is owned, operated, or controlled by the University, as well as the streets or highways that are immediately adjacent to University property. agents are responsible for deterring crime, maintaining the peace, protecting lives and property, proactive patrol, and responding to calls for service within the University community. This will be accomplished by such means as high visibility patrol, intervention in criminal acts in progress, and investigation of criminal violations, etc.

Work schedule will include rotating shifts: 48 hours one week, 36 hours second week.

All new hires and transfers from other agencies must serve a probationary period.

Police agent Trainee: Required to attend Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) at Pitt Community College. Trainee will progress to Police agent I upon prosperous completion of BLET and attainment of law enforcement agent certification from the NC Law Enforcement Training & Standards Commission. Upon prosperous completion of the BLET State Comprehensive Written Examination, the BLET trainee has one year from the date of the State Comprehensive Examination to be duly appointed and sworn as a law enforcement agent in North Carolina. The recruitment income for this level is $43,624.

Police agent I: Positions at this level are entry-level with 0-2 years of practice in law enforcement. Additionally, candidates will have completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training and be certified as a Law Enforcement agent in conformity with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or have the capability to achieve certification within one year of employment. The recruitment income for this level is $45,920.

Police agent II: Positions at this level are fully functioning agents with two or more years of practice as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement agent. Additionally, candidates will have completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training and have attained their Intermediate Certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission (NC CJETSC). The recruitment income for this level is $48,216.

Police agent III: Positions at this level are veteran agents with four or more years of practice as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement agents. Additionally, candidates will have completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training and have attained their Intermediate Certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission (NC CJETSC). The recruitment income for this level is $50,626.

Recruitment may occur at the varying competency levels, including Trainee, Police agent I, Police agent II, or Police agent III. Assessment of competencies will be determined located on the candidate's set of expertise, expertise, and capability to prosperously perform the tasks of the position, qualifications, certifications, and practice.

Minimum Education/practice Minimum of High School diploma or GED. At least probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police agent and prosperous completion of the appointing agency's designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police agents.

*Trainees will be considered but must have the capability to qualify for attendance at a State of North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Academy including satisfying all significant background check and physical agility requirements as required by the NC CJETSC and hiring agency.

Note: Outside lateral hires who are already sworn law enforcement agents at time of hire may be placed in any of the significant career progression steps for Police agent located on prior sworn practice. However, such appointment is conditional on prosperous completion of the agency's field training program. Out-of-state hires attainment of NC CJETSC certification within an agency-specified timeframe.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation Certification as a Law Enforcement agent in conformity with provisions of the NC Criminal Justice & Standards Commission or the capability to achieve certification within one year of employment.
