Job Summary The Department of Forest Ecosystem and Society is seeking an salaried Academic Wage: Faculty Research adjunct. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term position. This position is anticipated to last approximately 16-18 months.

This position exists to support the project PI and Co-PI, on the Oregon BLM Tribal Youth Conservation Corps for Seeds of Success Project with all aspects of Traditional Ecological expertise (TEK), including research, logistics, data collection, ethnobotany, scholarly activities, and outreach on Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians (CTCLUSI) lands and surrounding lands and with the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Indians (CCBU) and the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde (CTGR). Information technology is intended to help build capacity within the CTCLUSI community (FBIC) by leading a graduate research project and recruiting, training, and supervising Community Fellows, and by having co-authorship of an ecocultural restoration plan.

Key Responsibilities 50% Lead and assist with planning for and implementing fieldwork data collection and management, focusing on forest community ecology, which includes ethnobotany, silviculture, soil science, and wildlife surveys, and SOS seed collections. Collect Assessment Inventorying and Monitoring (AIM) data per BLM protocols by establishing plots on Tribal Lands and adjacent BLM Lands, where appropriate. Collect soil data (soil horizon characterization) and other related data in a soil pit in each established plot. Collect aggregated soil samples and SOS collections as needed. Manage data, conduct data analysis, write reports, and participate in journal article writing. Help recruit, help train, and supervise field crew and Community Fellows. Drive vehicles in the field to transport Community Fellows and interns to field sites. Contribute to an ecocultural restoration plan that results from this work.

25% Participate in and contribute to scholarly activities including report writing, data analysis, interpretation and presentation, geospatial mapping, and eDNA analysis. Author/co-author peer reviewed publications and present findings at conferences, co-authoring articles and reports on Indigenous expertise and forest management for the BLM, the White House, and national natural resource leaders.

25% Assist with developing relationships with Tribal Nations mentioned above, incorporating traditional cultural elements as appropriate and in keeping with any agreements between OSU and Tribal Nations (e.g., an MOU). Tribal engagement activities include attending Tribal community events and supporting interns who are members of Oregon Tribal Nations. Help to create an environment that is welcoming for Tribal interns to lgain STEM within the context of Indigenous expertise

   » Bachelor's degree in forestry, natural resources, or related field.
   » expertise and familiarity with Western Oregon Tribal Nations and their culture.
   » expertise of Indigenous expertise, including ethnobotany (ecology and uses of plants that are culturally significant), use of cultural burning, and traditional land uses.
   » expertise of Oregon Tribal land-management practices.
   » expertise of and practice working with the ecology of the Coos Bay area
   » Soil science, silviculture, and botany field expertise.
   » Ecocultural restoration expertise, including restoration of native plants.
   » capability to engage in project outreach.
   » leadership abilities and management expertise.
   » Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule The field season (June-early September) has an 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., M-F, 40 hr/week work schedule. Fieldwork will require extended periods of standing, traversing steep, uneven/very rugged and steep terrain, lifting up to 40 pounds and working in heat (e.g. 90-105 degrees F). Camping will be required on occasion, but crew members will be primarily located out of field houses. May require working on weekends or evenings to support cultural activities.
