Job Summary This is an Internal Employment Opportunity The Department of Microbiology (MB) is seeking a Head Academic Advisor. This is a full-time 1.00 FTE, 12-month, professional faculty position. The Head Academic Advisor will supervise the MB advising team, serve on the departmental Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, perform academic advising and program support for the Ecampus students in the BioHealth Sciences major, as well as for the BioHealth Sciences and Microbiology majors on the Corvallis Campus. This position will also participate in School of Life Sciences and College of Science recruitment and retention efforts. Some evening and weekend work is required. In-state and out-of-state travel is occasionally required. The Department of Microbiology, staffed by about 20 faculty and three instructors, trains about one thousand undergraduate majors and 35 graduate students. Key Responsibilities 35% Academic Advising » Provide academic advising for Microbiology and BioHealth Sciences majors within the Department of Microbiology. » Advise new students at START each term. » Assist with Ecampus orientation, articulation, and advising. » Advise students who are undecided or unclear which career areas they are pursuing. » Assist College of Sciences students with general requests such as change of major forms, petitions, referrals to appropriate services. » Write letters of recommendation for students as appropriate. » Lead the pre-health advising activities in the department. 20% Microbiology/BioHealth Sciences Student Services Coordination and Program Support » Coordinate development of student services policies and exceptions where appropriate. » supervise design and development of advising materials such as advising guides, websites, etc. » Coordinate and consult with advisors and teaching faculty dealing with student issues and provide connections to outreach and referrals as appropriate. » Support development of appropriate career resources and professional development opportunities for Microbiology and BioHealth Sciences majors. » Approve coursework for transfer students or students changing major to Microbiology or BioHealth Sciences and coordinate appropriate MyDegrees exceptions. » Serve as liaison to the Corvallis campus and Ecampus on advising and student services issues. » Collaborate with CUSE, DUS, office staff on student services and programmatic issues. » Coordinate student communications and outreach through the listserv and other modes. » Assist with undergraduate orientation courses as needed. 20% Microbiology/BioHealth Sciences Academic Advising leadership abilities » Lead and supervise a team of advisors, collaborate with faculty and staff to summarize and evaluate advising and student success issues and communicate with the department, college, or other OSU leadership abilities as appropriate. What You Will Need Bachelor's degree in a life science field or a Bachelor's degree from any field and two years of significant professional life science practice. One year of practice in college or university academic advising, student support, or teaching/counseling of post-secondary/adult individuals. One year of demonstrated practice in leadership abilities, teamwork, and organized planning or problem-solving. Demonstrable practice supporting diverse populations coming from historically excluded groups, such as racial and ethnic, gender diverse, minoritized sexual identities, abilities, discapability, veteran statuses, and socioeconomic levels. capability to communicate clearly with a diverse group of students and staff through written (electronic and other) and oral communication. capability to maintain confidential, detailed, and accurate student records. Strong interpersonal expertise, demonstrated through working effectively with teams and students.
