Work Schedule 7:00 am - 3:30 pm; Monday - Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours required, as necessary. A possibility of a Tuesday - Saturday shift depending on the University's needs.

Mandatory Position

This position is designated as ?mandatory' and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the building as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.

Primary Purpose of Position This position serves as a Utility Specialist - with responsibility for providing semi-technical work within University-owned utility service areas including sanitary sewer, reclaimed water, and domestic water. Will perform testing, repair, and maintenance connected with backflow preventer assembly apparatus, as well as construction inspection of utilities served by the University for development. Additionally, work includes locating and marking the university's utility assets, coordinating NC811 tickets, and reviewing as-built drawings along with sewer videos.

Minimum Education/practice Required Minimum Appropriate qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalency and two years of practice related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and practice.

University Preferred Appropriate qualifications:

Graduation from a technical college with an Associate degree in electromechanical technology or instrumentation technology and a minimum of two years practice related to the area of assignment practice; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related practice.

Essential Job tasks
   » Test back-flow preventers campus-wide. Possession of a current and approved Backflow Assembly Certification Tester is required or the capability to obtain Information technology within the first year of hire.
   » Maintain reclaimed water system.
   » Perform preventive maintenance on fire hydrants to ensure proper operation.
   » Perform flushing of water distribution by operating blow-off valves and fire hydrants.
   » Perform and maintain water valve exercising with related equipment to ensure proper operation.
   » Apply standards of the Safe Drinking Water and Clean Water Act.
   » Apply expertise of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and safety regulations related to water quality and backflow avoidance.
   » Apply principles of Cross Connection Control (Backflow avoidance)
   » Apply operational and maintenance practices of the American Water Works Association.
   » Performs construction inspection of utilities served by the University.
   » Additionally, work includes locating and marking the University utility assets, coordinating NC811 tickets, and reviewing as-built drawings along with sanitary sewer video.

   » Must have a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina or be in the process of obtaining one if relocating from another state.
Departmental Preferred practice, expertise, Training/Education
   » Three years of related practice in water distribution, wastewater (including sanitary), and other utility systems, including the practices of water quality, fire hydrant operation, backflow avoidance assembly testing along repairs, and operating in-ground water valves along with equipment connected with performing tasks preferred.
   » expertise of the techniques for taking water samples, testing methods, and performing related tests.
   » expertise of utility construction techniques, processes, and materials.
   » capability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications and to compare them with various aspects of construction in progress
   » practice operating in-ground water valves and equipment connected with performing tasks.

   » Water Quality/Water Treatment expertise.
   » State, Journey, Technician, or variation of Plumbing License preferred.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications • A valid driver's license.
