Organizational Unit Overview The Department of English (english.ecu.edu) is a vibrant and energetic community of teachers, scholars, researchers, and writers. The diversity of this department is one of its strengths, and our students benefit from a breadth of faculty skills across many areas of study. Our faculty and students pursue interests and scholarship in literature, creative writing, technical and professional communication, rhetoric and composition, multicultural and transnational literature, folklore, film studies, linguistics, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Our department offers four degrees: a B.A. in English; a B.S. in Professional Writing and Information Design; an MA in English; and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Writing, and Professional Communication. The department also offers undergraduate minors in English, creative writing, film studies, linguistics, and professional writing and information design. The department also supports general education for all majors across the university through Writing Foundations courses and courses that contribute to writing intensive, diversity, humanities, and social science general education requirements. The flagship publication of the Department of English, The North Carolina Literary Review (NCLR), publishes creative writing, literary criticism, interviews, and book reviews. Est. in 1992, NCLR has won six awards from the Council of Editors of Learned Journals. With submissions from North Carolina writers wherever they are, Information technology is produced by faculty and students at ECU and published annually by UNC Press. Three online issues are also published annually. The Department of English works closely with other departments whose degree programs include our courses. Our faculty and students are important partners in advancing the university's strategic plan area of distinction as a cultural champion in our region and beyond. Job tasks The Department of English at East Carolina University seeks to fill a fixed-term faculty position with the title of Teaching Instructor or Teaching adjunct Professor (depending upon qualifications) to teach 4 undergraduate courses per year and serve as the adjunct editor and program director for the ECU's award-winningNorth Carolina Literary Review (NCLR). The position begins in August 2024. This full-time non-tenure-track position is for fall and spring semesters of the 2024-2025 academic year, with the possibility of subsequent appointments.

The faculty member will teach primarily undergraduate writing courses and will work with student interns, in consultation with the NCLR editors, on the everyday operations of producing 4 issues of the North Carolina Literary Review a year. Additional tasks may include working with the Technical and Professional Communication (TPC) faculty and the NCLR editor to arrange workshops in courses focused on editing and publishing, and with creative writing (CW) faculty to arrange beta screening by their classes for NCLR contests; working with the NCLR editor, CW faculty, and TPC faculty to develop and supervise a publication laboratory; organizing outside programs and projects (e.g., visiting writers, issue releases, bookstore readings to promote contests, literary events); and collaborating with the editor on grant writing and fundraising initiatives to support NCLR work.

Minimum Education/practice Master's degree in English or closely related field is required for appointment as Teaching Instructor.

An MFA or PhD degree in English or closely related field is required for consideration for appointment as Teaching adjunct Professor.

Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions. Candidates should demonstrate expertise of and practice in teaching courses in first-year writing.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation None

Preferred practice, Skills, Training/Education Preferred qualifications for the position include practice in publication management.
