Job Summary The North Willamette Research and Extension Center is seeking a Director. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC) is located within the Willamette Valley and features world-class horticulture and crop sciences field research. The 160-acre research and Extension center is home to several faculty and program specialists and serves farmers in the north Willamette Valley area. The station is about 20 miles south of Portland and serves the seven surrounding counties focusing on high-value crops. Approximately 40% of Oregon's farmgate value is produced within 50 miles of NWREC.

The center's research and education programming is focused on the region's most important crop systems: nurseries and greenhouses, fresh vegetables and specialty seed crops, berries and small fruit, Christmas trees, orchard crops, and field crops connected with large and small farms. In addition, NWREC is the location for the state's only IR-4 Pesticide Registration program, which works with many of the state's agricultural crops all over Oregon.

This appointment develops, implements, supervises, and assesses research and Extension programs of NWREC in support of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Oregon State University. The Director has responsibility and authority for all station programs and major decisions, including, but not limited to, vision and direction for the center, strategic planning, fiscal management, and facilities development.

The Director is charged with determining resource needs and priorities, developing and managing the NWREC budget, and participating in strategic planning efforts as part of the College of Agricultural Sciences management team.

The Director is responsible for supervising or directing supervision of all staff and faculty at NWREC. Supervision includes planning, assigning, and approving work; compensateing/disciplining; responding to grievances; hiring/firing (or effectively recommending); preparing and signing performance evaluations/reviews of all employees, including classified, temporary, professional, and academic faculty. The Director determines the center's organizational structure and job content/responsibilities. The Director is responsible for identifying all employees' training and professional development needs and making appropriate arrangements and/or recommendations for training and professional development.

There is an expectation for research and scholarship in this position. Expected scholarly results include the development of research proposals and contracts, publication of reports and journal articles, development of patents, presentations at scientific conferences, graduate education, and/or other trainee education.

The Director serves as the primary liaison between OSU and local community stakeholders. The Director has the responsibility for maintaining strong relationships with stakeholder groups and serving as the contact between the local community and the College of Agricultural Sciences to advance the mission of Oregon State University. The Director provides strong, positive local relationships with county governments, elected and appointed county/state/federal officials, and regional stakeholders. Stakeholders include organizations and individuals with whom OSU collaborates (clients, advisers, and others who share or benefit in the assessment, design, delivery, and evaluation of learning opportunities with OSU). The Director will facilitate agricultural and community educational services and opportunities within the community. The Director will proactively engage with industry personnel and growers to address local agricultural needs and challenges, work in partnership with the NWREC Advisory Council and seek their input in priority setting and management decisions as appropriate, participate on committees and other professional activities with the College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS), University, governmental agency, and community.

The Director ensures center compliance with university policy, industry standards, and State and Federal regulations, participates in and communicates with external organizations that promote and support the center's research efforts, including civic and governmental agencies, commissions, councils, industry partners, and community organizations.

Key Responsibilities 40% leadership abilities, Administration, and Supervision

   » Participate as an administrator in the College of Agricultural Sciences and program planning at the unit, college, and University levels.

   » Conduct annual performance evaluations for all staff. Collaborate with department heads of the academic homes of faculty, and Extension Regional Director(s), during the yearly review of faculty and collaborate with department heads during the promotion and tenure process.
   » Support and guide the professional development of all faculty and staff.
   » Report results of educational, Extension programs, research programs, and activities to administrators, clients, and other funding sources. Keep records and provide reports to CAS and Extension admin, academic, and budgetary units, including work plans and accomplishment reports.

30% Research and Scholarship
   » Develop and conduct an extramurally funded, innovative research program that provides timely information that benefits agricultural production and/or natural resource management at the state, national, and global levels.
   » Establish research priorities to meet the needs of local agriculture through active input from commodity commissions, local industry, and clientele groups.
   » Participate in applied research and Extension proposals, projects, and programs as appropriate.
   » Provide leadership abilities and oversight for research and research planning by diversifying and increasing the number of researchers, funding sources, and research approaches.
   » Develop and nurture diverse opportunities to enlarge OSU's footprint in the region and impact local community and clientele groups
   » Collaborate with scientists from NWREC and other OSU units, other universities, and agencies (e.g., ARS) in interdisciplinary research and extension programs aiming to promote sustainable and profitable agricultural production.
   » Scholarly results expected for this position may include the following: development of sponsored research proposals and contracts; publication of peer-reviewed technical reports, extension bulletins, journal articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings; development of scientific technologies/methodologies and integration of knowledge leading to new interpretations; award of patents; presentations at scientific meetings and conferences, and participation on steering committees, agency panels, and science working groups where the outcome is a fundamental change in the field's direction; and training of graduate students and postdoctoral trainees.

20% Outreach and Community Engagement
   » Develop and maintain strong working relationships with elected officials, County Commissioners, community leaders, state and federal decision-makers, local school districts, the Chamber of Commerce, OSU Extension Regional Director(s), and others as appropriate to support educational programs at NWREC. Drive to and attend meetings connected with the previous list.
   » Serve as the primary liaison to local county government and stakeholders. Build and maintain relationships with county officials and state and federal decision-makers. Share information about research and Extension program activities and results with state and federal legislators about NWREC.
   » In collaboration with OSU University Relations and Marketing, CAS Marketing and Communications, and Extension Communications, develop effective relationships with local media with a focus on promoting and marketing NWREC.
   » Connect the public to OSU resources, including outreach, volunteer, and service-learning programs and opportunities available from all OSU colleges and units. Responsible for customer satisfaction within the local community.
   » Promote and develop programs and services that support research development and the center's mission.
   » Create opportunities for increased engagement between OSU and the community. Build relationships that lead to strong OSU engagement in covering the community's critical issues.
   » Seek and develop collaborations and partnerships with county-level organizations and agencies to expand NWREC's reach and impact. Improve local OSU presence and outreach.
   » Contribute to statewide trend analyses about community educational needs; convene local discussions about local and regional needs with community members and leaders as appropriate.
   » Develop outreach/Extension program priorities and long-range plans for NWREC in cooperation with academic units and regional needs and secure the staff and resources to implement these plans.
   » Manage donor relations for NWREC in collaboration with OSU Foundation.

   » Support CAS, Extension, and other OSU departments through participation in committees and other administrative activities.
   » Maintain active membership and participation in appropriate professional organizations.

What You Will Need Ph.D. in Agronomy, Applied Economics, Entomology, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, Soils, or other related disciplines.

National record of scholarly achievement in research, extension, instructional, and/or service activities commensurate with the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure.

At least five years of practice supervising and managing personnel.

Demonstrated practice with budget development and success in meeting budgetary goals.

Clear knowledge and commitment to the mission of land grant institutions.

Outstanding professional and collaborative leadership abilities.
