Listing description
Reporting to the Manager of Tour Programs, the Tour Program adjunct uses excellent customer service and presentation expertise to engage visitors in the house, galleries, and garden to bring a cohesive and vibrant interpretation of the entire Winterthur estate. In addition, Tour Program adjunct will serve as Lead Guides, coordinating interpretive activities on assigned days.
Tour Program adjuncts make significant contributions to tour content, format, and training materials. This involves intensive research, writing, collaboration, and knowledge of visitor practice and interest.
Flexibility, enthusiasm, and a desire to embrace institutional change while safeguarding the intellectual integrity of the estate's history will be critical for the success of this position. Demonstrated leadership abilities in an educational or museum setting as well as a familiarity with interpretive strategies for engaging diverse audiences is a plus. Superb communications expertise and a availability to tackle new programmatic content will be required.
Evening and weekend hours will be required of the position, particularly during major estate-wide events and high visitation periods including, but not limited to Yuletide (mid-November to early January), Mother's Day, Point to Point (May), Artisan Market (July) and others.
Tour Program adjuncts will participate in continuing training to continue to expand their knowledge of the collection, museum and estate, as well as to hone their interpretive expertise. The Associate Director, working with the Director of Collections, will conduct tour assessments for all Tour Program adjuncts all over the year to ensure content accuracy as well as optimal accessibility for all visitors. An enthusiasm for creating a welcoming, dynamic, and engaging practice at Winterthur for all our visitors is a must.
Work Schedule: 35 hours per week, including up to 4 weekend days per month
Compensation: $20.00/hr

Responsibilties:
   » Guide tours and engage with visitors in the House, Galleries and Garden. After training, guide regular and seasonal museum and estate tours for general and specialist audiences.
   » Serve as the Lead Guide in the house and garden on a rotating basis which will include attending the morning meeting with the interpretive staff, liaising with the Visitor Services adjunct on duty and other key staff to know all circumstances that will impact the guiding day and plan accommodations accordingly. The Lead Guide responsibilities will be shared among all Tour Program adjuncts, each functioning in that capacity three to four days a week.
   » Provide interpretation of the garden and estate that suits various ages, abilities and interest levels, including via:
   » Narrated tram tours, which include driving up to 24 people in an open air tram along predetermined routes for up to 45 minutes while sharing approved interpretation via a public address system, hearing and answering questions, and suggesting other opportunities available to visitors.
   » Narrated shuttle transportation, which include driving up to 20 people in a timely manner on a predetermined route to their various destinations while providing light orientation to the property, answering questions, and promoting everyday offerings.
   » Guided walking tours of up to 90 minutes for general and specialist audiences, and school garden programs; some of which will have pre-determined interpretation, others will require the guide to determine best places to go and topics to discuss located on visitor interests.
   » Make significant contributions to the creation of tour content, research, and training materials
   » Support continuing interpretive training in both content and technique in conformity with Winterthur's interpretive goals.
   » After training, serve as mentor and Lead Guide for new and existing guide staff
   » Support assessments of interpretive offerings using a variety of evaluation methodologies including tracking, surveys, and interviews to ascertain points of resonance with visitors and areas where opportunities exist to improve the visitor practice.
   » Complete Care-in-Handling training with the collections staff in preparation for assisting with occasional collections moves required to prepare the house for seasonal installations.
   » availability to participate in additional programming that supports interpretive goals which could include Terrific Tuesdays and other educational offerings.
JOB Requirements:
Minimum practice: B.A. in education, museum studies or related field; equivalent practice considered in lieu of education - 1 -2 years of practice guiding at a museum or historic site as a paid or volunteer guide, or one year of practice teaching at any grade level
Preferred practice: In addition to minimal education, courses in art history or horticulture with 2 plus years of practice working in an educational or museum setting that required interpretive work or public facing responsibilities
Knowledge/expertise:
1. Excellent communication expertise
2. capability to quickly and efficiently synthesize new interpretive content
3. Basic knowledge of primary source research techniques
4. A passion for offering a welcoming and dynamic visitor practice for all visitors
5. Familiarity and demonstrated interest in art, architecture, American material culture, garden and landscape history
6. practice in creative interpretation and/or educational programming
7. Sensitivity to and familiarity with interpretive techniques that encourage diversity, inclusion, equity and accessibility for all visitors
8. Able to work both independently and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders.
9. capability to develop interpretive program content.
10. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and the capability to lgain new computer systems and programs.
Essential Functions:
1. Guide walking tours lasting up to 2 hours at a time and provide stationary interpretation during the self-paced tour lasting up to 6 hours.
2. capability to navigate all stories of a historic house and operate and ride in elevators
3. capability to lead 90 minute garden walks navigating hilly terrain, on a variety of surfaces, and going up and down stairs, while interpreting.
4. capability to safely drive visitors on a variety of Winterthur vehicles, including garden trams, shuttle buses, and golf carts, while simultaneously interpreting the garden and estate for them
5. Valid Driver's License free of any moving violations, and capability to prosperously complete a Defensive Driving Course.
6. Occasionally loading or unloading a guest who uses a wheelchair. capability to work with another staff member lowering and raising a 50-pound hinged wheelchair ramp. capability to position an occupied wheelchair onto a ramp or lift, and to bend and kneel to fasten and unfasten restraints.
7. Work outside in adverse weather conditions
8. Able to talk and communicate sufficiently to exchange accurate information.
9. capability to communicate via email, with appropriate training provided by Winterthur
