The Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology offers a MS degree, three graduate certificates, BS degree, an accelerated BS/MS degree, and four minors - criminal justice, criminal law and legal process, criminology, and forensic science. we At Presenthave 11 tenure-line faculty and 6 full-time instructors with research and teaching skills in criminal justice, criminology, and law. The Department has the third largest number of majors in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences. Information technology provides students with a comprehensive educational practice, including exemplary academics and numerous extra-curricular opportunities. The graduate program is consistently recognized as an exemplar in online education by the US News & World Report and has been ranked the number one program in North Carolina for several years. Department members collaborate regularly with colleagues in the college and broader university, including those in the Departments of Anthropology, Chemistry, and Political Science, and the School of Social Work. In addition, the Gambling Research & Policy Initiative (GRPI) ( https://criminal-justice.ecu.edu/grpi/ ), which has the overall goal to conduct research on gambling consciousness, behavior, risk, and gambling-related harms, is housed within the department.

Job tasks The Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology seeks to fill the position of chair at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor (preferred), with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025. This is a 12-month, leave-earning position. The primary responsibilities for this position include: superviseing administration and leadership abilities of the department; promoting excellence in faculty research and teaching; mentoring faculty members; assisting in efforts to secure external funding; ensuring quality, integrity, and growth of student degree programs; supporting departmental, college, and university policies and standards; fostering collegial relations among all stakeholders; serving as an advocate for departmental needs and priorities; and effectively representing the department to internal and external constituents. The chair is expected to spend at least 50% of their time on administration and leadership abilities tasks, with the remaining time devoted to research, teaching, and service. The chair will teach regularly in the department and maintain an active research agenda. Candidates whose research complements existing research programs in the Department are encouraged to apply. Service to the university, community, and profession is expected.

The chair will be committed to fairness in hiring, resource allocations, promotion, research, engagement, and teaching. They will provide leadership abilities to meet the needs of diverse learners and scholars with broad intellectual interests.

Minimum Education/practice Qualifications for the position include: (1) a Ph.D. or equivalent in Criminal Justice, Criminology or a closely related discipline; (2) a strong and continuing record of scholarly publications and productivity, commensurate with an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor; (3) demonstrated excellence in teaching and service; and (4) administrative practice or evidence of management skills commensurate with the position.
