Job Summary The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science invites applications for multiple, full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Instructor or Senior Instructor I positions. Reappointment is at the discretion of the School Head. This Instructor position is part of the core team of instructors for the on-campus Computer Science program in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). The instructor will develop and teach a variety of computer science courses in the areas of operating systems and introductory programming, with opportunities to develop and teach courses in other areas of the program as needed. Computer science instructors will work among a supportive group that promotes a positive team-work environment. Key Responsibilities 90% - Teaching: » Prepare and/or teach course materials in Computer Science. » Responsibilities include equipping students with the required skill set, facilitating classroom discussions, assessing student performance, preparing students to be prosperous leaders in their chosen profession, and creating an inclusive classroom (e.g. mentoring and supporting students from diverse backgrounds, fostering affirming classroom interactions across difference, challenging structural/cultural barriers that limit movement towards social equity in engineering education and practice). » As needed, assist in developing courses or course materials and driving curriculum design in the Operating Systems and other areas of the curriculum. » Provide leadership abilities, supervision, and direction for undergraduate and graduate teaching adjuncts. 10% - Service: » Provide service to OSU and the land grant system by working on departmental, division, university, regional and national committees and projects. What You Will Need Minimum Qualifications (For All Ranks) » Master's in Computer Science or related discipline. » Demonstrable in-person teaching or training practice and capability. » Demonstrated capability to actively engage learners. » Demonstrated expertise of inclusion and equity issues within Computer Science or other STEM fields including a demonstrated commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. » Demonstrated expertise, capability, and/or practice in teaching undergraduate courses in Operating Systems (CPU scheduling, processes & interprocess communication, memory management, file systems, system calls & utilities, kernel and low-level programming) and introductory programming (syntax, structure, computer basics, algorithms). » Effective written and verbal English communication expertise. Additional Minimum Qualifications for appointment at the rank of Senior Instructor I » Four years of professional practice teaching at the college- or university-level » Sustained record of exceptional teaching at the college or university level as evidenced by student evaluations of teaching. What We Would Like You to Have Preferred Qualifications (For All Ranks) » practice developing instructional materials for university courses. » Demonstrated potential to teach, or practice teaching a variety of undergraduate Computer Science courses beyond operating systems and introductory programming. » Familiarity with a breadth of programming tools, frameworks and best practices, including those currently in high demand among employers in the software industry. » Fluency in C/C++, Python, assembly and/or other low level programming language(s), as well as connected tools (e.g., IDE debuggers or gdb). » practice with a Unix/Linux environment and command line tools. » 2 or more years of industry practice in Computer Science or other engineering fields. » Proficiency in fundamental Computer Science concepts (i.e., programming languages, theory of computation, and algorithms). Working Conditions / Work Schedule Other than an in-person faculty retreat that takes place in Corvallis, Oregon in September of each year, all work can be performed remotely. Must be available to work during normal Pacific time zone business hours. Travel expenses incurred for the faculty retreat will be reimbursed according to university guidelines.
