Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Cook 2 position for Housing and Dining Services at Oregon State University Cascades (OSU-C).

This position is located in Bend, Oregon.


In support of the OSU-Cascades Signature Areas of Distinction, the Dining Services team exists to support the health and wellness of all students, faculty and staff by providing food and beverage choices that facilitate our own health, contribute to the collective well-being of our community, and work in collaboration with internal experts as well as external partners. The OSU-Cascades campus is a 300 bed residence hall, 250 seat dining center and coffee shop with full-service food service operation including catering that offers inspired cuisine and exceptional service to on-campus students and customers that emphasizes a focus on local and sustainable ingredients, healthy food options and cooking from scratch. Catering events include intimate gatherings, business meetings and conferences of varying sizes.

The purpose of this position is to ensure that guests of OSU-Cascades dining operations receive a high quality, nutritious and satisfying meal. This position has responsibility for preparing and producing the food production for a designated area, preparing foods for special diets, maintaining adequate product, and training students and staff on cooking methods and procedures. This is done by providing leadership abilities and function modeling on how to maintain high quality food and how to prepare menu items using solid fundamental cooking methods with a focus on safety and sanitation.

Key Responsibilities Meal Prep (50%)
   » Responsible for appearance, flavor and overall quality of menu items being served.
   » Modify recipes as needed, located on instruction from Sous Chef or Chef de Cuisine.
   » Preform prep work such as washing, peeling, cutting, and seeding fruits and vegetables.
   » Weigh and measure designated ingredients to assist in preparation of menu items by following the directions from lead cooks and Chef de Cuisine.
   » Follow recipes and standards for meal production and presentation on the serving line.
   » Ensure that serving stations remain well stocked to accommodate customer demand.
   » Prepare packaged meals for grab-n-go service.
   » Follow operating procedures for all food production equipment.

Sanitation and Safety (20%)
   » Prepare food items following all safe food handling procedures including but not limited temperature documentation.
   » Remove any unappetizing food products from area following waste procedures and documenting as needed. Ensure that students who assist in meal preparations are following safe and sanitary procedures.

Customer Service (15%)
   » Create an exceptional overall practice for customers by providing friendly, polite, expertiseable, and efficient service. Resolve customer concerns and relay information to manager.

Instruct Student Workers (10%)
   » Instruct student workers as necessary in procedures and needs for food preparation. Advise manager on the performance of student workers, as requested.

Other (5%)
   » Other tasks as assigned by manager.
What We Require
Two years of cooking practice in an institution or commercial firm serving complete meals; OR an Associate's degree in Food Service Management, Foods and Hospitality Service, or a directly-related field.
What You Will Need
   » expertise of large quantity food preparation.
   » practice in safe and sanitary methods for food and beverage preparing, handling, and storage.
   » practice working with kitchen equipment including, but not limited to: grills, fryers, knives, slicing machines, mixers, ovens and steam kettles.
   » Demonstrated capability to follow instructions and stay organized.
   » Demonstrated passion for food and the food service industry.
   » capability to respond positively to changing work demands as well as the capability to work cooperatively with a variety of individuals.
   » Professional oral and non-verbal communication expertise.
   » Requires a valid Food Handler's certificate within 30 days of employment. Must maintain certification all over service with OSU-Cascades.

This position is required to maintain current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification (if cognitively and physically able to do so) within 90 days of employment of when training becomes available by the department. Training is provided at department expense. Duty to act end at summoning professional emergency assistance.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule OSU Cascades is a seven-day-a-week operation, so weekends, evenings, and occasional holiday work will be required. This position requires the capability to work a flexible schedule located on operational needs.

The employee in this position will often be required to lift/carry/push/push/pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds. This position is deemed essential and the incumbent is expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures.

This is a physically active job in an institutional kitchen environment. Incumbent will practice long working periods of standing on a hard floor; working with commercial kitchen equipment; fluctuation in work flow, temperature and noise level.
