Organizational Unit Overview The Department of Physiology is dedicated to the discovery, development, and promotion of biomedical knowledge involving basic and applied biomedical sciences with an emphasis on the study of cellular and molecular basis of tissue function. The research programs are focused on knowledge the integrative mechanisms of physiological processes within the context of both health and disease. The investigators emphasize an integrative approach to biomedical science, with skills in research methods for investigating cardiac function, pulmonary and vascular regulation, skeletal muscle biology, spinal cord injury, nerve regeneration, cancer, metabolism, and bioenergetics. Through this mission, we aim to improve human health through innovative educational programs and excellence in research and scholarly activities in a dynamic learning community. The tasks for this position will occur primarily in the Warren Life Sciences Building in the lab of Dr de Castro Braz. East Carolina University is located in Greenville, North Carolina. Greenville is Eastern North Carolina's cultural, educational, medical, and economic center. The Greenville/Pitt County area has a population of approximately 175,000 and is one hour from the Research Triangle to the west and the Crystal Coast to the east. East Carolina University (28,000 students) is part of a vibrant healthcare community including ECU Health, a level 1 trauma center, and a 1400+ bed health system serving more than 1.4 million people in 29 eastern North Carolina counties.

Job tasks The research specialist will be trained to independently conduct experiments, assist students with their research, and perform data analysis. Job tasks include:
   » Perform research experiments under the direction of the principal investigator. This will include but is not limited to cell culture, Western blots, RT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, ELISAs, sample prep for mass spectrometry, etc.
   » Assist with tissue processing, and be responsible for organization, storage, and proper labeling/identification of tissue and blood samples.
   » Provide supervision of technical staff and students in the laboratory
   » Develop and maintain detailed records of experiments and report data in an organized fashion (tabular, oral, written, and/or graphic formats) to the principal investigator.
   » supervise laboratory inventories and maintenance of hazardous/chemical waste records and disposal as needed.
Research 70%: plan and execute experiments, optimize and modify procedures independently as needed, data collection, strict documentation, and data analysis
Lab operations 15%: laboratory safety and inspection, instrument calibration, and ordering
Personnel training 15%: Train and supervise students and junior researchers, as well as supervise individual projects.

Minimum Education/practice Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and practice. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification required by statute or regulation N/A

Preferred practice, Skills, Training/Education practice working as a laboratory research technician or research specialist.
