Primary Function of Organizational Unit The Gambling Research & Policy Initiative (GRPI) is housed within the Department of Criminal Justice & Criminology with the overall goal to conduct research on gambling consciousness, behavior, risk, and gambling-related harms, including - North Carolina gambling behavior and risk prevalence studies, state/national/international studies focused on marginalized groups, and other studies aimed at filling research gaps.

Job tasks The postdoctoral scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research in gambling behavior, risk, and gambling-related harms. Responsibilities include management of all aspects of multiple continuing interdisciplinary research projects of the Gambling Research & Policy Initiative. tasks may include: hypothesis development, literature review, collection of pilot data, report writing, and supervising of undergraduate research students and graduate research students, superviseing data collection procedures, supervising experimental procedures, review of data for quality control, supervision of data entry/data analysis, analysis of research hypothesis using descriptive and multivariate statistics and/or qualitative data, and the development of independent and collaborative presentations and publications.

Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.

Approximately 60% of the postdoctoral scholar's time will be devoted to conducting research and data integrity.

Approximately 25% of the postdoctoral scholar's time will be devoted to manuscript writing, grant proposals, research reports, and presentations.

Approximately 15% of the postdoctoral scholar's time will be devoted to managing the day-to-day activity of undergraduate and graduate research students working on GRPI projects.

   » Demonstrated interest in addiction-related or related research
   » capability to function independently with minimal supervision/instructions
   » capability to meet deadlines, handle and prioritize requests
   » PhD in psychology, criminal justice/criminology, sociology, social work, counseling, public health, or related fields
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation None

Preferred practice, expertise, Training/Education
   » Demonstrated interest in gambling-specific research
   » leadership abilities and/or managery practice
   » Strong capability to manage and query large datasets, and to analyze and interpret results, using software tools appropriate to the project
   » practice in prosperously building data modeling and visualization tools and proficiency with data visualization tools
   » Demonstrated capability to work efficiently and effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the community at large
   » practice writing data manuals, codebooks, or other means of data documentation and visualization
   » Skilled at managing multiple projects, tracking, and resolving complex issues as they occur
