Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Chemist 2 position for the Department of Forest Engineering, Resources, and Management at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Cooperative Chemical Analytical Laboratory, CCAL, is an analytical services laboratory operated by the College of Forestry at Oregon State University (OSU).

CCAL specializes in high quality, trace level analysis of nutrients, ions and physical properties of lake, stream, precipitation and groundwater research samples. Precise and accurate results are fundamental at CCAL. CCAL's Quality Assurance Program is designed to conform to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) surface water chemistry criteria, and is a continuous process that monitors every analysis and procedure performed in the laboratory.

The Chemist 2 performs standard analytical procedures and laboratory tasks in a production environment, as well as more complex analyses requiring interpretation of results and corrective action. Specialized measures are required for high quality, trace level analytical results; the Chemist 2 recommends improvements in procedures and may assist in implementation. The Chemist 2 supervises all phases of laboratory processes to ensure complete cross-training and expedited and orderly sample flow.

Key Responsibilities 50% - Analytical Tasks:
Performs standardized and advanced procedures in determination of alkalinity, conductivity, pH, automated colorimetric analysis. Assists chemists. Completes standard calibration of instrumentation and communicates with vendors as needed. Performs maintenance and repair of complex instrumentation to maintain compliance with Quality Assurance Objectives.

25% - Laboratory Logistics:
Makes initial contact with new and returning customers, utilizing clear and accessible communication. Communicates with customers regarding planning and scheduling of sample processing, answers questions regarding tests/analyses, and any other customer issues. Plans and prioritizes schedule for sample processing, ensuring fair and transparent scheduling practices. supervises maintenance and troubleshooting of peripheral equipment and lab maintenance. Serves as the Health and Safety agent for CCAL, promotes a safe and inclusive work environment by considering the diverse needs of all employees in health and safety protocols, and tracks certification for Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) trainings, CCAL trainings, and OSU Critical Training for all lab employees.

10% - Lead Work:
Plans and assigns setup and digestion of samples to lab technician and student employees for analysis, filtering, reagent preparation, track chemicals and supplies, temperature monitoring, and glassware preparation. Reviews work to ensure validity of data. Ensures complete training that respects and acexpertises different learning styles and facilitates the growth and development of lab technician and student employees on various lab procedures, techniques, and execution of procedures.

5% - Develops and maintains quality assurance for analytical procedures. Ensures techniques meet laboratory specifications. Applies corrective action.

10% - Reports:
supervises sample login, analysis tracking, return shipping, database entry, report results, out-of-control conditions, quality control results log. Completes and submits analytical results reports to the manager.

What We Require
One year of practice independently performing analytical chemistry procedures and a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry. Three additional years of pertinent practice may substitute for the Bachelor's.

What We Would Like You to Have
   » Five years of practice in a trace level water analysis lab.
   » General and Analytical Chemistry courses, and Experimental laboratory courses.
   » practice with Quality Assurance and Quality Control principles and adherence.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule The capability to work in fast paced general chemical laboratory conditions with hazardous chemicals (obtainable by the general public), and capability to lift 50 lbs. is required. The incumbent will need the capability to stand for long periods of time, and carry heavy items up and down stairs. The work schedule is generally Monday through Friday between hours of 8:00 am and 6:00 pm, but may require some off hour work, not to exceed 40 hours per week.
