Primary Purpose of Department The primary purpose of the Office of Advising and Student Services is to provide academic advising using a developmental model approach. Academic Advisors work with students to develop the expertise, expertise and personal accountcapability needed to explore their academic and co-curricular options, evaluate and track their own progress toward graduation, access support and enrichment services, and understand and follow university policies and timelines.

Advising services encompass a range of interactions with students from individual and small group meetings, in-person and online to email, among others.

Primary Purpose of Position Understand and effectively implement developmental advising principles and best practices that emphasize the advisor's function in guiding students' development of environmental and interpersonal consciousness, problem-solving and decision-making expertise, in addition to capacity for self-evaluation and behavioral adaptation. Defined as such, advising is essentially a teaching function and is an integral part of the University's educational mission.

Summary of Position Responsibilities The academic advisor is primarily an implementer of a developmental advising model that involves a tailored series of interactions and communications using advising tools and systems designed to address the specific needs of the students.
   » Learns and remains current on all significant curriculum for the discipline, and for curricular areas more broadly beneficial to the students' degree program.
   » Assist students in developing the expertise and expertise needed to effectively explore, establish and integrate their academic, career, and life goals.
   » Assist students in developing plans for making progress towards these goals while attending UNC Charlotte and evaluating and charting one's own progress toward those goals.
   » Understand and effectively develop students' expertise of university academic policies, regulations, guidelines, and deadlines and the curriculum requirements for the specific program(s) of study of the students being advised.
   » Understand and exploit the capabilities of the suite of academic advising technology-located systems used at the University.
   » Effectively use these advising systems to proactively engage students to ensure degree program persistence and timely graduation.
   » Develop students' abilities to use these systems and other significant information to regularly evaluate one's own progress toward academic goals and make appropriate behavioral and academic changes.

Specific functional areas include:
   » Liaison between the department, other college/university advisors and students
   » Orientation and outreach
   » Targeted advising
   » Work closely with the Chair/Undergraduate Coordinator/Program Director to ensure that the advising students are getting is serving the needs of the department or program as well as make the department aware to student issues as they arise
   » Coordinates with Associate Director on cross-training other advisors for their respective departments
   » Other tasks as assigned.
Minimum Education/practice
   » Candidate must have completed a Master's degree
   » Candidate must have at least two years of practice involving student academic advising or student support services in a higher education setting.
   » Candidate must also be attentive to detail, possess strong organizational expertise with the capability to prioritize while multi-tasking and manage tasks in an efficient and timely manner.
   » Excellent communication and interpersonal problem-solving expertise are a must.
   » capability to interact effectively with advisees, staff and faculty required.
   » A viable candidate must comprehend and abide by federal and university student confidentiality requirements.
   » Proficient use of computers (Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) is necessary.
Preferred Education, expertise, expertise and practice
   » Two years of advising practice after the attainment of the Master's degree is required.
   » A working expertise of Banner, EAB and Degree Works is a plus.
