Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Biological Sciences Research Technician 1 position for the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Oregon State University (OSU).

This is a limited duration appointment expected to last approximately 6 months from the appointment begin date.

This position will be part of a field crew sampling fish and characterizing habitat in the Willamette River basin as part of long-term monitoring effort. The position will conduct fish sampling and water quality measurement in shallow waters. Familiarity with fish habitat classification methodologies is required in order to be prosperous in the function.

Key Responsibilities 100% - Field and Lab Research:
   » Maintain professional working relationships with all co-workers on the job and in shared housing.
   » Follow safety check-in and check-out protocols.
   » Operate backpack electrofishing to sample fish in shallow areas.
   » Load and unload field equipment (40 lbs. or more) off onto truck and field sites as needed.
   » Drive long distances within Oregon to field sites, especially around the Willamette River Basin.
   » Identify, measure and photograph fish collected.
   » Take and record habitat and water quality measurements and eDNA surveys
   » Lab work will include process of macroinvertebrate samples, sediment samples, water quality samples, eDNA preparation, and fish stomach contents
   » Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
What We Require
Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science); OR an equivalent combination of training and practice.
What You Will Need capability and availability to work in a crew as a communicative, productive member

Familiarity with fish habitat classification methodologies

Possess good common sense and problem-solving expertise and be detail oriented

Commitment to working professionally and inclusively with people from all backgrounds.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle; therefore, the applicant must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule The crew will be stationed in Corvallis and drive to various pre-determined sampling locations along the Willamette River. Will work up 40 hour/week, and can be as 4 day-10 hour schedule Mon.-Thurs depending on weather conditions (sampling needs to stop when river water temperatures exceed 23? Celsius). Position works long hours and variable schedules depending on weather conditions. Physically complete all listed tasks and responsibilities including sampling fish with backpack electrofishing equipment and minnow traps, driving truck, lifting heavy equipment and nets is required.
