The Department of Agricultural Botany and Plant Pathology invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Faculty Research adjunct position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

This is an academic research position for the College of Agriculture's Botany and Plant Pathology department.

College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS) faculty are committed to enhancing student success by engaging students in quality academic, research, internships, global studies, and other experiential learning opportunities. There is an expectation that, as part of your function in the college, you embody and advance the principles and practices conveyed in the CAS CARE Commitment document.

The incumbent(s) in this position will supervise the establishment of a permanent plot network in the mixed conifer forests of southwestern Oregon in order to evaluate the impact of the invasive forest pathogen, Phytophthora ramorum, the cause of sudden oak death, on the forest ecosystems of southwestern Oregon. The incumbent(s) will identify locations, supervise the establishment of plots, and collect samples all over the tanoak ecosystems of Oregon and potentially northern California.

Key Responsibilities 40% Laboratory Research . Design and carry out existing protocols using molecular methods. May conduct/produce independent research commensurate with practice. Responsible for maintaining equipment and supplies to ensure laboratory is in proper working order. Proper recording, documentation, and other administrative tasks expected.

30% Field Research. Carry out existing protocols to collect data on wildlife from remote field sites for research goals.

20% Data management. Analysis, and scholarly contribution. Organizes and manages data collected from field sites, including analysis of data and interpretation of results. Contribute to scholarly findings through authorship/co-authorship of reports and peer-reviewed publications

10% Personnel management/ Lead Work . Trains field crews and undergraduate researchers in proper field protocols, laboratory protocols. Fosters an inclusive work environment and maintains a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

What You Will Need
   » Bachelor's degree in wildlife science
   » practice collecting field data at remote study sites and data management
   » practice navigating with a GPS and/or compass in forest ecosystem at remote sites
   » practice collecting and managing camera trap and autonomous recording unit data
   » practice working with sudden oak death
   » Demonstrable commitment to working inclusively with people from all backgrounds

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

   » Previous lab practice in DNA extraction, PCR, high-throughput DNA sequencing

Working Conditions / Work Schedule This position involves working in a laboratory or office and fieldwork. Work outdoors Is at remote field sites on rugged terrain and in adverse weather conditions. The incumbent will be expected to travel to Brookings, OR on a regular basis. The incumbent may also work in the greenhouse.
