Employment Job Category: Administrative/Professional Regular/Temporary: Regular If temporary, list duration: Type of Appointment: Fiscal Contract Period: 12 month Position Summary Information Position Summary: University Student Success offers programs, services and interactions that guide students in making informed and timely decisions that help them accomplish their academic, career and personal goals. Primary responsibilities of this function include advising and retention of freshman and sophomore students. The Academic Advisor will support students from identified academic programs in collaboration with colleagues on their College Success Team. Additionally, the Academic Advisor will support university wide engagement and retention initiatives that support all APSU students. Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN. Primary tasks and Job responsibilities: • Be a proactive and constructive participant within an advising team dedicated to student success. • Advise a caseload of freshmen and sophomore students to support their transition and success at APSU. • Provide proactive advising using techniques such as motivational interviewing and appreciative advising framework. • Support student retention by working with advisees in academic difficulty and recommending appropriate actions and resources. • Utilize retention data to inform decisions on student advising initiatives. • Track and manage student appointments, alerts and notifications within EAB Navigate. • Assist students in the process of declaring or changing a major. • Participate in retention initiatives sponsored by the department, college, or university. • Help students understand university and degree requirements, interpret a degree evaluation, and develop a responsible approach to academic planning. • Be expertiseable of all academic programs at the university; maintain consciousness of and integrate revisions in departmental requirements. • Support the Student Success Coordinators in planning the logistics and the advisement of students at Governors Orientation (GO). • Assist with the coordination and delivery of workshops and classroom presentations regarding academic advisement. • Represent the office during campus events such as Preview Day, First Fridays, and campus college fairs. • Assist the Executive Director in establishing student learning objectives related to the work of the department, intervene with students to produce intended results and participate in assessment and evaluation. • Perform other job-related tasks as assigned. expertise, expertise, and Abilities: • capability to efficiently operate a personal computer and connected software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.), SungardHE Banner and EAB Navigate. • expertise of university and degree requirements. • capability to work with diverse populations, to establish rapport with university students, and to interact with family members. • capability to maintain accurate files and records of student contacts, both electronically and on paper. • capability to maintain confidentiality. • capability to communicate effectively and appropriately, both verbally and in writing. • capability to work in a team environment as well as complete tasks individually. • capability to apply student development and career development theories. • Commitment to keeping abreast of current academic advising and student success literature and practices. Physical Requirements: - Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Required Minimum Appropriate qualifications: • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university • practice working in an educational and/or university setting with diverse student populations. • Computer literacy. • capability to work flexible hours to include evenings and weekends. • expertiseable about FERPA. • practice working with diverse populations. • A background check will be required for the prosperous applicant. Additional Preferred Appropriate qualifications: • Master's degree in college student personnel, higher education, education or related field highly preferred. • Prior academic advising practice preferred. • practice working with SungardHE Banner.
