Job Summary Insurance and Risk Management Services is seeking an adjunct Director. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE),12-month, professional faculty position.

This position reports to the Executive Director of Insurance and Risk Management Services.

The adjunct Director supports the Executive Director on strategic and operational leadership abilities to carry out initiatives, programs and services related to insurance and risk financing, claims management, risk management, and loss control efforts. The adjunct Director participates in strategic planning efforts, supports the priorities and goals of the unit, and assists with appropriate allocation of resources. The adjunct Director directly provides leadership abilities, supervision, and direction for a sub-group of three team members within Insurance and Risk Managements Services.

The adjunct Director of Insurance and Risk Management Services will:
   » Assist in directing, administering, and maintaining a comprehensive insurance program (annual FY24 insurance premiums were $13.4 million)
   » Implement appropriate risk financing techniques that include commercial insurance and self-insurance strategies to ensure that coverage is consistent with university needs
   » Supervise and manage tort and insurance claims, collaborate with the Office of General Counsel on litigated claims, focus on prosperous claim resolutions, and supervise the integrity of claims information
   » Interact with external entities and vendors to support the university insurance and loss control program
   » Report data and metrics for trending and develop risk mitigation strategies where needed
   » Collaborate with teammates to provide advice as Information technology relates to insurance requirements
   » Provide risk management consultative services to university stakeholders on a broad spectrum of risks; support risk assessments and make recommendations to reduce exposures to loss
   » Communicate with units and provide support, education, training and guidelines to the university within the scope of the insurance programs and risk management practices
   » Support the university in preparedness efforts and emergency response situations
   » Foster a welcoming workplace environment that increases a sense of belonging for staff, faculty, students, and internal/external stakeholders
   » Actively participate on various committees and groups
   » Provide supervision and direction for assigned professional faculty and staff
   » Assist with monitoring/reconciling fiscal accounts and appropriately allocating resources
   » In conjunction with the Executive Director, advance the strategic plan and priorities of the university, division and unit.

Key Responsibilities 25% - RISK MANAGEMENT & INSURANCE leadership abilities AND CONSULTING:
   » Assists the Executive Director of Insurance and Risk Management Services to direct, plan and administer the risk management and insurance program to protect the university's financial, human, physical and reputation resources in its diverse and expansive activities.
   » Collects and submits underwriting data for the university's insurance renewals and new coverage requests, as needed, and evaluates and manages insurance purchases.
   » Partners and collaborates with units, departments, colleges, and other stakeholders on risk-related matters, provides value-added risk consulting, and supports risk management strategies to appropriately treat risks and maximize opportunities all over the university.
   » Implements procedures, plans and programs in consideration of statutes, rules and regulations, and works to embed/integrate risk management into processes and procedures all over the university.
   » Creates, implements and communicates/presents risk management educational programs to promote a culture of risk consciousness.
   » Pulls together data related to the university's total cost of risk, tracks risk-related metrics, and compiles information for unit reports.
   » Collaboratively works with other 4-year, public institutions in Oregon as members of the Public Universities Risk Management and Insurance Trust (PURMIT) and serves as a member of the Risk Council.
   » Facilitates insurance carrier loss control visits and works with units on loss avoidance recommendations.

20% - RISK FINANCING:
   » Implements strategic risk financing techniques to include commercial insurance, self-insurance, and alternative financial strategies to ensure the university has appropriate coverage that is consistent with its needs.
   » Leads the efforts relating to insurance policy renewal planning process and purchase, ensures efficient and comprehensive collection of exposure information, tracks data, and completes insurance applications and provides guidance to staff all over the process.
   » Discusses new and current programs and projects with stakeholders to ensure appropriate and adequate insurance coverage is in place.

20% - DAY TO DAY OPERATIONS:
   » Manages incoming inquiries and requests regarding risk management services, policies, procedures, rules, and statutes.
   » Evaluates operational and activity-level risks, and provides risk management expertise/guidance and insurance skills to the university community.
   » Provides leadership abilities and supervision to ensure that efforts related to certificates of insurance requests, collection of certificates of insurance and renewal data, alcohol service review and clearance, event and activity space use are conducted in a manner that respects and values diverse perspectives and needs. This includes making these processes accessible and equitable for all individuals involved.
   » Collaborates with teammates to provide direction, support and advice as Information technology relates to insurance requirements.
   » Actively participates on university committees and groups and represents the university in professional organizations.
   » May respond to emergencies and disasters as part of the university's Incident Management Team or other response teams.

15% - CLAIMS MANAGEMENT:
   » Provides leadership abilities and supervision on, and also manages, tort and insurance claims and potential claims, ensuring that claims are reported, investigated, adjusted and settled in a manner consistent with insurance industry practices and state requirements.
   » Collaborates with Office of General Counsel on claims.
   » Assists with minimizing litigation; thoroughly reviews insurance policies and provides advice on coverage; takes efforts to reduce claims costs; and develops appropriate action plans and risk mitigation strategies where needed.
   » Leads team in analyzing claims data to determine trends, root causes and communicates results to division leadership abilities and departments. Benchmarks against other institutions. Leads efforts to target loss mitigation efforts as indicated by trends.

10% - managerY / OFFICE ADMINISTRATION:
   » Provides leadership abilities and supervision for assigned professional faculty and staff; hires and trains employees; sets work priorities and schedules and supervises delegation of day to day operations; acts on performance issues; and addresses grievances.
   » Assigns special projects and tasks and monitors for completion and adherence to established goals and objectives; and assesses performance through completion of written evaluations.
   » Reviews, drafts, and recommends operating procedures that promote efficient use of unit resources.
   » Provides oversight/review of invoices for accuracy and ensures accurate distribution and allocation of premiums and deductibles. Assists with monitoring and reconciling funds/accounts to ensure fiscal accountcapability.
   » Promotes quality customer service and ensures compliance with university policies, standards, and procedures.

10% - PROJECT / PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT:
   » Works with the Executive Director to continually enhance programs and develop the department in ways that prioritize diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. This includes enhancing communication outreach efforts to reach diverse audiences and ensure that information is accessible to all.
   » Executes on projects and program enhancements to improve service and data management, automate systems and reporting, streamline and document processes/procedures, and increase efficiencies.
   » Leads efforts on Risk Management Information System implementation.
   » Performs other tasks as required.
What You Will Need
   » Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (with a preference given for degrees in a related discipline such as risk management, insurance, business, finance, or accounting) and Five (5) years of professional practice in risk management, property and casualty insurance, or a related area OR nine (9) years of professional practice in risk management, property and casualty insurance, or a related area.
   » Two (2) years of leadership abilities practice, which can include managerial or managery functions, leading substantial projects or initiatives, leadership abilities training, and/or project management that engaged executive leadership abilities
   » Demonstrated capability to foster and maintain respectful and productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders from a variety of different backgrounds, cultures, and life practices
   » Working expertise in risk management techniques, insurance principles, and claims management
   » Demonstrated commitment to the highest ethical standards and integrity in professional settings, including making ethically sound decisions in complex situations, maintaining confidentiality, and promoting ethical practice among teams
   » Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written, with the capability to articulate complex concepts effectively to a diverse range of audiences
   » capability to problem solve effectively and carry out tasks independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating high levels of initiative and decision-making capcapability
   » This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
   » This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule Work environment is primarily office located; however, one may also spend time in laboratories, offices, animal facilities, hazardous waste storage facilities, shops, ship operations, and off-campus extension offices or experiment stations as needed.

Attendance at various events and activities may be required on evenings or weekends. Occasional travel will be required to attend on- and off-campus meetings, training or conferences, and to support operations all over the state.

The position supports essential functions of Insurance and Risk Management Services and may be expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency situations and other university work curtailments or closures.

This position is eligible for flexible work with the expectation of an on-campus presence on a regular basis. The flexibility of regular remote work mixed with in-office work as mutually agreed upon with the manager. Generally, the expectation is three working days in the office.
