Job Summary The North Willamette Research and Extension Center invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term adjunct Professor (Practice) position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director.

This position is at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center in Aurora, OR.

As a Horticultural Crops Research and Registration Specialist, this position will have an academic home in the Department of Horticulture. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Research Center Director.

The mission of the Oregon State University Extension Program is to execute research and deliver research-located, objective, informal education to help Oregonians solve problems, develop leadership abilities, and manage resources wisely.

The faculty member is primarily responsible for (1) providing leadership abilities in the development and implementation of a program designed to expedite the registration of pest management products for Oregon specialty crops and (2) develop outreach programs to educate and inform the horticultural and commodity group, including tree nut, small fruit, hop, oilseed, and forage producers, as well as processors, and other ag professionals of the research requirements and process employed to register safe, effective and environmentally sound pest management solutions for specialty crops.

The faculty member will collaborate with extension specialists, field faculty, university researchers, and commodity groups in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest to discover and identify effective pest-mitigating products and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies that preserve beneficial organisms, have limited environmental impact, mitigate the selection of pesticide-resistant populations, but still support the goal of optimizing production.

The incumbent will collaborate with the National and Regional Interregional Research Project # 4 (IR-4), the Oregon Department of Agriculture, and product manufacturers to expedite the registration of these products.

Key Responsibilities 55% - Research:
   » Serve as Director of the OSU IR-4 Field Research Center, also known as the Center for Pesticide Registration Research, located at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC), for expediting the registration of specialty crop pest control products.
   » Participate in and encourage multi-disciplinary and multi-state educational and research programs that focus on resolution of pest management issues.
   » Provide educational and applied research program leadership abilities designed to evaluate the benefits and suitcapability of pest mitigating synthetic, bio-rational, or biological compounds for use in agriculture, as well as the potential of these products for registration.
   » Collaborate with extension and university colleagues, commodity groups, and clientele in these efforts.
   » In cooperation with local commodity groups, agrochemical representatives, and university colleagues, conduct magnitude of residue field trials utilizing Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) for the IR-4 Food Use Program and supervise the establishment and maintenance of crop plantings on which research is conducted to help find pest management solutions for weeds, insects, and diseases in a wide variety of specialty crops grown in Oregon.
   » Maintain updated training in Good Laboratory and Field Practices credentials, as required by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, to conduct a magnitude of residue field trials.
   » Conduct agricultural field research on pesticide efficacy, degradation, and pest management strategies. Seek grant support for educational and applied research programs
   » Provide information to Oregon commodity groups, local agricultural industries, and OSU Extension Service personnel regarding allowable residue levels in crops for which special labels have been requested; and report on the status of petition requests to EPA.
   » Collaborate with the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to expedite local registrations of importance to Oregon producers.
   » Lead engagement efforts with Oregon's most important crop commodity groups to collect and collate information about the impact of regulatory actions; perform qualitative and quantitative analysis, and summarize information for the benefit of stakeholders and decision-makers

25% - Outreach:
   » Serve as a liaison between Oregon specialty crops, the regional IR-4 Programs, and appropriate regulatory agencies to relay pest management needs and regulatory updates that are specific to Oregon.
   » Communicate new expertise or creative solutions through presentations at grower meetings, professional conferences, public or community gatherings, and through publications such as trade journals, extension publications, and peer reviewed outlets.
   » Provide leadership abilities and broader access to pesticide regulatory information and make recommendations on pesticides for consultants and others involved in Oregon agricultural industries.
   » Communicate the impacts of proposed pesticide labels and regulatory changes on Oregon agriculture to the EPA.
   » Pursue continued professional development significant to assignments and incorporate new expertise and expertise.

10% - Scholarship and Creative Activity:
   » Submit field data notebooks of the magnitude of residue trials and complete all QC/QA activities to maintain notebook integrity and meet pesticide registration requirements.
   » Discover new expertise and develop creative solutions and applications for problems related to pest mitigation in horticultural food commodities.
   » Communicate new expertise or create solutions through presentations and by publishing in proceedings of these meetings, lay journals, and peer-reviewed publications.

5% - Supervision:
   » Supervise faculty research adjuncts, bio-technicians support staff, and summer students and interns. Personnel management activities include hiring, work-flow management, and performance evaluation.

5% - Service:
   » Provide service to the department, college, university, and community through committee and community service, leadership abilities, and liaison functions, as appropriate and as requested by the unit and university administrators.
   » Serve on local, state, regional, and national advisory committees and task forces as appropriate to the position's responsibilities.
   » Participate in the programs and activities of professional organizations, as appropriate.
What You Will Need M.S. or equivalent in horticulture, crop science, entomology, plant pathology, weed science, or related field.

Work practice: a minimum of two years in applied entomology, plant pathology, weed science, and/or integrated pest management systems.

Demonstrated capacity for designing, conducting, and reporting on field research including operating equipment and applying fertilizer and pesticides.

Demonstrate strong scientific writing and technical presentation expertise.

capability to work independently and within a team and communicate with colleagues, stakeholders, and government agencies.

Must have or be able to obtain an Oregon Pesticide Applicator's Consultant License within three months of employment and maintain Information technology all over employment.

Demonstrated capability to serve constituents from different backgrounds and with different life practices, particularly members of minoritized communities.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
