The North Willamette Research and Extension Center invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Faculty Research adjunct position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

This is a full-time position with the North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC) at Oregon State University (OSU). This position is located at the OSU's North Willamette Research and Extension Center in Aurora, Oregon. NWREC is part of Oregon State University's Agricultural Experiment Station and Extension Service. This position contributes to Oregon State University's North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC) mission of conducting horticultural crops research and extending new knowledge to the horticultural industries and communities, particularly in the Willamette Valley. Information technology also supports the OSU Extension Service mission to engage the people of Oregon with research-located knowledge and education that strengthen communities and economies, sustain natural resources, and promote healthy families and individuals.

Mission
The Nackley Lab serves as the Research Leader for Nursery Production at Oregon State University, with Extension responsibilities and a function in undergraduate and graduate teaching. Our mission is to sustain horticultural production systems by partnering with growers and academics to provide research-located solutions for plant cultivation challenges. The Nackley Lab is committed to inclusivity and investigates the issues affecting young plants. We are scientists and educators with skills in ecology, entomology, soil science, and engineering, dedicated to helping people grow plants prosperously.

Purpose
The purpose of this position is to support the nursery production program at NWREC. The Nursery Production team conducts research, teaching, and Extension, and the incumbent would support all facets of the work conducted by the program. This position will be responsible for managing all aspects of agricultural research, including taking experimental designs from paper to implementation in the field or greenhouse. This involves knowledge experimental design, procuring materials, building systems, monitoring plants, recording and analyzing data, and presenting research results. The incumbent will provide objective, science-located information related to nursery production and greenhouse management, actively engaging in scholarly activities and field research to advance the mission of the Nackley Lab and NWREC.

Key Responsibilities 60% Research Assistance
   » Experimentation: Set up and conduct experiments to study the effects of controlled and uncontrolled environments on plant growth and nursery operations. Implement experimental protocols to test new technologies or methods in plant production.
   » Fieldwork: Conduct fieldwork to collect data on plant responses to experimental treatments. This includes sampling, monitoring, and evaluating the impact of various factors on nursery crops.
   » Record Keeping: Maintain detailed records of research procedures, environmental conditions, and experimental results. Ensure all documentation is accurate and up-to-date.
   » Data Collection: Gather data related to how the experimental treatments, and natural extreme weather affect plant production. This includes field measurements, observations, and environmental data significant to nursery production.
   » Data Management: Organize and maintain research data collected from our experiments. Data will be stored online and shared within the lab and with project collaborators. Therefore, Information technology is essential to ensure data accuracy and accessibility for analysis and adhere to safe data management practices to prevent espionage and data theft.
   » Sample Preparation: Prepare plant samples and other materials for analysis, including processing for laboratory tests and data collection on technological impacts.
   » Equipment Maintenance: Manage and maintain research equipment, including those used for climate monitoring, data collection, and technological applications in plant production.
   » Project Coordination: Assist in coordinating research projects related to climate adaptation strategies and technological advancements in nursery production. Work collaboratively with team members to ensure projects are completed on schedule and objectives are met and contribute positively within the team to ensure a workplace environment that is safe, respectful, and inclusive.

30% Scholarship
   » Research Conduct: Design and execute experiments in Nursery Production and Greenhouse Management. This involves formulating research questions, developing methodologies, and analyzing data to advance knowledge specific to nursery production practices in Oregon.
   » Publication: Write and publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, trade articles, and online stories such as webpages and social media. Present results at academic conferences and contribute to industry publications to disseminate knowledge and best practices.
   » Peer Review: Participate in the peer review process by reviewing submissions to significant journals and providing constructive feedback to ensure the quality and relevance of research in nursery production.
   » Educational Outreach: Develop and deliver educational content located on research findings. This includes creating and presenting materials for field days, workshops, and Extension outreach programs that target nursery growers and horticultural professionals in Oregon. Engage with local communities to apply research insights and improve nursery production practices. Promote and communicate information about research and nursery production practices and programs in a way that allows for communication to an audience from diverse backgrounds and cultural identities.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule Will be expected to work in the field, at times, under adverse weather conditions including rain, snow, and heat.

The capability to execute physical labor in the field, including operating equipment. The capability to execute tasks that may involve lifting, bending, and working in various environmental conditions is required.

Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to attend educational events. Field work may begin as early as 6:30 a.m. during a certain season and long hours may be required when data collection needs to be completed.

Travel and driving within the Willamette Valley to research/field sites, to research meetings in Corvallis and within the region to off-site education events is required.
