The Facilities Manager (FM) independently supervises the construction and maintenance of the various building projects and landscapes that make up Seed the North’s campus. The FM reports to the Founder/Principal and works closely with the Design Team, Construction Team, and occasionally the Seed Team.
Seed the North’s operational model is Architect-led Design/Build. Our design team and most of our construction team are in-house. The FM manages the construction and procurement process, translating construction drawings into built architecture. This involves directing the construction team, contractors, and fabricators. Supported by the design team, the FM interprets architectural drawings and makes key decisions about how on-site craftspeople should execute them. The FM is a key player in design and planning discussions with the architects, engineers, and consultants, providing strong expertise of construction practices, building systems, cost estimating, and logistics. Future projects may necessitate the involvement of a General Contractor, and the FM will be our primary representative and a strong advocate for Seed the North’s interests.
This position requires an independent mindset while also being highly collaborative with excellent communication expertise. Regular video and email collaboration with engineers, craftspeople, architects, vendors, project managers, founder, and lead designer will be required; however, most time will be spent working on site, managing construction and maintenance operations in person.
This position requires being on site 5 days a week for 8 months of the year. While Information technology may be possible to commute from Smithers or Terrace, establishing a residence in Hazelton is preferred. We provide a relocation allowance and local advice to get you started. Finding housing for our staff is something we take seriously. In fact, one of your first projects will be to execute the construction of on-site housing for seasonal staff.
Seed the North is a Social Enterprise. We support the regeneration of Northern Landscapes and communities by harnessing the power of seeds to generate ecosystem and community resilience. Our context is rural and remote, presenting unique operational challenges while inviting a blend of normative and unorthodox construction practices. This position requires an agile mindset that is able to switch between a state of open-mindedness and back to a strong pragmatism, while valuing our social enterprise’s capital.
The ideal candidate will enjoy living and working in a remote and rural environment, and may like to engage in local outdoor activities such as hiking, paddling, mountain biking, skiing, fishing, and hunting.
Seed harvesting and ecological restoration are highly seasonal activities. As a result, Seed the North has a seasonal business model which is reflected in our construction timelines and vacation offerings. The ideal candidate will use this seasonality to their unique advantage and bring their own vision to what this function can be.
