Primary Function of Organizational Unit East Carolina University (ECU) is a member of the University of North Carolina system, enrolls 28,000 students annually, with over 5,500 pursuing graduate and professional degrees. ECU is classified as a R2-Doctoral/Research-intensive University and is located in Greenville, NC (pop. 92,000), which lies 80 miles east of Raleigh and a short distance to the Atlantic coast. A thriving small city and regional center for education, health, and the arts, Greenville offers a college-town atmosphere and is a great place to live, work, play, and visit. Information technology has a cost of living more than 10 percent below the national average and boasts a vibrant Uptown district with restaurants, breweries, and shopping. Greenville hosts a variety of festivals all over the year and offers numerous recreational opportunities, including access to the Tar River, more than nine miles of greenways, nearly 30 parks and recreational facilities, and a growing arts scene.

ECU's Department of Biology administrative offices are located in the Life Sciences and Biotechnology Building, a gateway to a growing, vibrant downtown district in the coastal region of North Carolina. The Department of Biology is one of 16 units in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences and is home to more than 1,400 undergraduate majors and 70 graduate students and instructs more than 17,000 students each academic year. Information technology is a comprehensive department that emphasizes an integrative approach to the study of life sciences. We offer undergraduate majors in Biology and Biochemistry and graduate opportunities at both the M.S. and Ph.D. levels. The Department is made up of approximately 40 faculty, 7 post-doctoral scholars, and 13 support/technical staff.

Faculty are actively engaged in research. On an annual basis faculty generate approximately $2-3 million in new grant awards and expend approximately $1.5 million in direct research costs. The Department offers several core support services (e.g., Genomics Core Facility, Environmental Research Lab, and Imaging Core facility), is committed to both professional and public service, and collaborates with a number of external partners.

Job tasks The postdoctoral scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research in the discipline of biological oceanography. Responsibilities include management of all aspects of a NOAA Climate Program Office grant related to modeling seasonal and distribution changes of fish spawning aggregations in the National Marine Sanctuaries and knowledge how this will affect population dynamics via larval dispersal modeling. tasks include: hypothesis development, literature review, collection of pilot data, report writing, and supervising of undergraduate research students and graduate research students, superviseing data collection procedures, supervising experimental procedures, review of data for quality control, supervision of data entry/data analysis, analysis of research hypothesis using descriptive and multivariate statistics, and the development of independent and collaborative presentations and publications.

Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.

Approximately 85% of the postdoctoral scholar's time will be devoted to research on the project described above.

Approximately 15% of the postdoctoral scholar's time will be devoted to managing the day-to-day activity of undergraduate and graduate research students in the laboratory.

Minimum Education/practice English Proficiency

PhD in biological oceanography, fisheries science, ecology, or a closely related area

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation Drivers License

Preferred practice, expertise, Training/Education Previous practice with modeling the spawning habitat of fish spawning aggregations in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Previous practice with larval dispersal modeling.
