Job Summary The Department of Food Science & Technology is seeking a Dairy Pilot Plant Manager. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The OSU Dairy Pilot Plant is an essential component of the overall OSU dairy foods program within the Department of Food Science & Technology. The pilot plant is utilized for industry innovation trials, OSU dairy processing courses, FST graduate and undergraduate research activities, dairy extension courses, production of Beaver Classic cheese and ice cream, and serves as an incubator facility for dairy entrepreneurs.

This position schedules and manages all activities within the newly renovated dairy plant. This includes implementing and following safe dairy processing procedures and compliance with state and federal licenses and regulations. The position continues to elevate and expand the dairy plant to become a showcase for Smart Manufacturing and for cross training of food science and engineering students. The position maintains strong connections with the regional dairy industry and supports industry where possible.

Key Responsibilities 65% Management of OSU Research, Teaching, and Innovation Dairy Pilot Plant
   » supervise and manage the everyday operations of the OSU Dairy Plant.
   » Lead the student team producing Beaver Classic cheese and ice cream. Coordinate with other Beaver Classic leadership abilities to assure proper inventory of products.
   » Coordinate and work with companies that want to conduct product and process innovation trials in the pilot plant.
   » Support dairy entrepreneurs who utilize the dairy plant as an incubator facility.
   » Support dairy foods and other research conducted within the dairy plant.
   » Recruit, schedule, and mentor undergraduate student workers. Creates an environment of enthusiasm for careers within related fields.
   » Supervise student workers including planning, assigning, and approving work; compensates/discipline; responding to grievances; hire/fire (or effectively recommend); preparing and signing performance evaluations/reviews of students.
   » Develops budgets and operational forecast, including short and long-range planning, fiscal management, fee assessment, and contract management.
   » Manage and maintain the dairy laboratory including equipment purchases and maintenance, development of standard operating procedures, quality control checks, and safety training and record keeping.
   » Manage maintenance, improvements, modifications, and use of dairy equipment (including packaging line, heating elements, pasteurizer, separator, cheese equipment, etc.). Ensure compliance with food safety standards, university policy, state and federal regulations, and industry standards for quality.
   » Maintain all state and federal licenses.
   » Operate motor vehicle for transport of milk and occasionally other dairy products.

20% Dairy Industry Outreach
   » Coordinate and collaborate with the dairy foods team to help develop and implement an effective and industry significant dairy foods outreach program that may include development of industry workshops, seminars, educational materials, and technical assistance.
   » Engages with dairy industry visitors in outreach with internal and external stakeholders including guest speaking opportunities and event coordination to promote the dairy pilot plant programs.
   » Act as liaison with industry to enable employment opportunities for students and graduates within the dairy industry.

10% Dairy Teaching Support
   » Assist with instruction of dairy processing for-credit courses, extension courses, and PACE courses.
   » Lead engineering capstone senior level teams.
   » Ensures diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts including
   » promoting equitable results among learners of diverse and underrepresented identity groups.

5% Other tasks as Assigned
   » Participate in external and university groups.
   » Maintain memberships in appropriate organizations.

What You Will Need Bachelor's degree in Food or Dairy Science, or a related field AND 3 years' practice within dairy processing industry OR an appropriate and equivalent combination of education, training, expertise, and professional practice in dairy processing.

Practical practice operating, maintaining, assembling dairy or food processing equipment.

practice working in a processing setting that adheres to safe dairy or food processing.

Understands food safety regulations applicable to cheese and ice cream processing.

practice developing and implementing Food Safety plan and written procedures.

practice with adhering to budgets and familiar with basic accounting.

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Demonstrated capability to communicate and work effectively with varied audiences such as faculty, students, industry, and clientele in a team environment.

Currently possess or have capability to obtain HTST Pasteurization Operator License within 90 days of hire.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05- 030.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule Working in the research and teaching dairy pilot plant will require physical work. This position will be required to lift, carry, and transport 40lbs. Position requires availcapability to work a varied schedule and beyond normal business hours as needed. Position will occasionally travel.
