The Office of Legal Affairs provides comprehensive legal advice and assistance on matters involving or affecting UNC Charlotte to the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, the other senior administrators of the University, and through them, to the University's faculty and staff.

Primary Purpose of Position Attorneys in Charlotte's Office of Legal Affairs have challenging, wide-ranging practices and must be able to handle multiple, unrelated matters concurrently. The Research Counsel incumbent must be able to complete complex projects both independently and with direction from the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Integrity and General Counsel and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and Deputy General Counsel. The Research Counsel incumbent will be the primary attorney on research-related matters for the Office of Legal Affairs and will work closely alongside the other attorneys in the Office of Legal Affairs as well as administrators and staff in Charlotte's Division of Research.

Summary of Position Responsibilities The Research Counsel incumbent will provide legal advice and assistance on all legal aspects of research at an urban research university, including intellectual property, compliance, export controls, conflicts of interest, and other issues integral to the institution's research mission. Depending on prior work practice, the selected candidate will either be positioned as adjunct or Associate General Counsel.

The Research Counsel incumbent will have other tasks/focus areas as assigned by the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Integrity and General Counsel, and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and Deputy General Counsel located on personal practice and institutional need. As with all attorneys in the Office of Legal Affairs, the Research Counsel will be expected to research, provide advice on, and draft communications and legal documents regarding the full range of state and federal laws, regulations, and policies applicable to a UNC constituent institution.

Minimum Education/practice
   » J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
   »adjunct General Counsel requires at least 1 yearof significant, post-law school practice.
   »Associate General Counsel requires at least 5 years of significant, post-law school practice.
   » Prior practice advising on research-related matters as an attorney for a university (or commensurate in-house or law firm practice) is required.

Necessary Certifications/Licenses
   » Must have a current license to practice law in North Carolina, or obtain such license within one year of employment.
   » Must be currently licensed in good standing without any instances of suspension, revocation, censure, or other adverse events in any jurisdiction.
