Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Temporary Technical/Para-Professional: Field Safety Coordinator position for the Center for Oldest Ice Exploration, a Science and Technology Center at Oregon State University (OSU). This position is expected to last for three (3) months.

This position provides critical field safety services and coordination for a team of up to 12 people working in a very remote region of Antarctica. This position is in support of the NSF funded Center for Oldest Ice Exploration, a Science and Technology Center headquartered at OSU.

Key Responsibilities 50% General field coordination tasks include the following :
   » As needed, trains field participants in the use of life-safety survival gear and field equipment used in field research and travel. This includes but is not limited to sizing climbing and other safety equipment, operating camp stoves, erecting a variety of tents, and offering instruction on the proper use of a large variety of other field equipment.
   » Provides technical skills, support and risk assessments for field party.
   » Interacts with National Science Foundation, other sub-contractors (e.g. air support providers), military, other agency officials, and Antarctica New Zealand, both over the telephone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.
   » Operates snowmobiles, tracked snow vehicles, and all other mechanical equipment issued to the field project.
   » Works with Central-Comms, Helo Ops and Av Ops to ensure resupply to the field groups; Packages, TCN's, and tracks resupply cargo
   » Responsible for maintaining a safe, inclusive, and welcoming workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace
   » May use a variety of techniques to safely travel in crevassed terrain including, but not limited to, roped foot travel, roped snow machine travel and use of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for crevasse detection.
   » May read and interpret GPR data on a tractor or snow machine traverse for crevasse detection.
   » Report intensive weather observations on flight days as per USAP aircraft requirements.
   » May be called upon to participate in a Search and Rescue situation and act as an Incident Commander, SAR Team Leader or SAR Team Member.
   » Ensures all cargo is returned from the field to McMurdo and is cleaned and returned to appropriate work centers before redeployment.
   » Performs remote field support tasks to NSF sponsored events as required.
   » When deployed into the field, takes on a leadership abilities function to support science activities.
   » Performs other tasks as required.

50% Field deployment tasks may include the following:
   » Maintains a field safety function focusing on risk assessment and management of field hazards.
   » Supports the packing, prioritization, and loading and unloading of cargo from aircraft.
   » Responsible for hazardous cargo identification, labeling, and handling prior to, while in, and during transport from the field.
   » Builds, breaks-down and hooks live sling loads from helicopters.
   » Performs tasks such as equipment operation, weather observations, and fueling as required.
   » Ensures field site and equipment are maintained and secured for Antarctic conditions.
   » Maintains a tidy camp, adheres to environmental protocol, and is responsible for retrograding waste as needed.
   » Acts as a first responder in the field as necessary, providing medical care at the Wilderness First Responder Level
   » Works with science teams at field camps to provide required support, troubleshoot issues, and is involved in decision making. May handle and resolve difficult situations such as personnel issues or resource limitations, ensuring that solutions are equitable and inclusive.
   » Identifies and provides many logistical needs, including; inventory reporting, fuel deliveries, and snow melting.
   » Ensures that everyday communications and weather observations are reported.
   » Provides support cooking, re-supply food planning, and galley tasks and dish washing as needed.
   » Reviews scientific research requirements and/or field plans and provides guidance for proper survival training and necessary field gear.
   » Prepares an end of season report before redeployment.
   » May provide guidance to other camp staff and contribute feedback to end of season evaluations on camp personnel in conjunction with the Continental Field manager.
What We Require Varies

What You Will Need
   » High school diploma or equivalent.
   » Current CPR certification.
   » Current Wilderness First Responder certification.
   » Minimum of 8 years of practice in outdoor education and leadership abilities and minimum of 10 years of practice of technical mountaineering and guiding in alpine or polar environments.
   » Minimum of 5 years of practice working in a field safety capacity in Antarctica with the US Antarctic program, or grantees.
   » Computer competency.
   » capability to read mountain weather conditions.
   » Advanced crevasse rescue skills and instruction practice.
   » capability to read mountainous and glaciated terrain and find safe routes through such terrain.
   » capability to work as a team member, team leader or alone with little to no supervision, and to contribute to an inclusive team culture where all individuals feel welcome and respected.
   » Demonstrated capability to communicate and engage respectfully and professionally with individuals from a variety of backgrounds, identities, perspectives, and/or life practices.
   » Employment is contingent on passing required National Science Foundation (NSF) and United States Antarctic Program physical qualification assessment.
   » Must participate in community programs, such as ?house-mouse? (chores), ?daisy-picking? (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.

   » Wilderness EMT certification or higher.
   » Mountain guiding certification through IFMGA/AMGA.
   » Professional Search and Rescue practice.
   » Denali level or other big mountain expedition practice.
   » Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
   » Ground Penetrating Radar practice.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule This position is located in Antarctica and works at the McMurdo Station, South Pole and various remote locations around Antarctica. Access to phone and internet services not guaranteed. This position requires the availability and capability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods and a proven capability to work in a remote harsh environment. Work in extreme cold, wind and blowing snow is commonly required; occasional work at high altitudes is required.

The incumbent must be willing and able to execute physical activities including climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and lifting and moving items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum; the capability to frequently lift and push up to 50 lbs. and constantly move objects up to 20 lbs is required.

This position requires travel in military ski equipped aircraft, sleeping in tents on the polar plateau, shared dorm rooms at research stations, and in living quarters in traverse vehicles. Work at odd hours and all days may be required and may require irregular sleep patterns.
