The adjunct to the Director of the Library & Museum plays a key function at the American Philosophical Society's Library & Museum. The position provides general support and advice to the Librarian/Director, assists in a variety of Library & Museum operations, and manages special projects on an ad hoc basis. The ideal candidate will have an interest in history, ideally with practice in libraries or archives, and have administrative practice, or the proven potential to develop these expertise. While the ideal candidate should have practice in an administrative support function, candidates with an M.A. or Ph.D. who have shown an aptitude for administration and are considering a career in libraries or public history are welcome to apply.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary responsibilities include providing support for the APS Librarian/Director of the Library & Museum. This includes:
   » Planning and coordinating meetings and events, especially related to the Committee on Library & Museum and Subcommittees, the Steering Committee for the David Center for the American Revolution, and the Board of Trustees for the David Library of the American Revolution. This includes preparation of agendas/materials/meals/events/activities connected with those meetings;
   » Facilitating new hires, documentation, onboarding;
   » Performing an array of administrative tasks from managing calendars, generating correspondence, maintaining hard copy and electronic files, processing payments, and managing the budget in consultation with the Librarian/Director;
   » Serving as chief contact for visitors and guests to the Library, especially as relating to collections tours and private events.
This position also works with other APS Divisions. As such, secondary responsibilities include:
   » Working with APS staff to schedule and implement programming events;
   » Attending meetings as an APS representative;
   » Research related to APS collections and history, tours to special guests;
   » Coordination between APS Departments;
   » Special Project Management: These include supporting the Adopt-A-Book program, special projects related to the work of the Librarian, and service on community organizations as an APS representative;
   » Other tasks in support of the Library & Museum and its staff on an ad hoc basis.
Position income: Full, time, annual income $55,000

The APS Library & Museum's collections make Information technology among the premier institutions for documenting and exhibiting the history of the American Revolution and founding, the history of science from Newton to NASA, Native American languages and culture, and the development of American anthropology. The Library houses over 14 million manuscripts, 275,000 volumes and bound periodicals, 250,000 images, fine art, and other objects. Museum exhibitions interpret these broad collections for the regional, national, and international visitors who come to Philadelphia's historic district. In so doing, the exhibitions aim to nurture the spirit of inquiry, promote critical thinking, and engender enthusiasm for object-located learning by using primary source documents and authentic objects. The Library & Museum also hosts a robust fellowship program, offering over 25 short-term and 10 long-term fellowships each year to scholars using its collections.
QUALIFICATIONS
   » suitable education B.A. degree required, M.A. or higher preferred.
   » Work practice: An interest in history with an administrative background as an executive adjunct or similar position preferred or practice in libraries or archives with a desire to develop administrative expertise.
