Organizational Unit Overview The Department of Geography, Planning and Environment is an academic unit within the Thomas Harriot College of Arts & Sciences. The primary mission of the department is to support the strategic priorities of the University and College through the provision of distinctive and integrative programs of instruction, research, and service. The department has 12 full-time faculty members and offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the areas of community and regional planning, geography, geographic information science, and atmospheric science. Department faculty are active researchers and are involved in prosperous grant-funded projects and collaborations with other units at ECU. The department has committed to supporting a vibrant learning environment and an atmosphere of teamwork and respect.

Job tasks The primary purpose of the position is to provide lead administrative and organizational support to the unit administrator and department faculty in support of the unit's teaching, research and service activities. Specific tasks are wide-ranging and varied, and success in the position requires exceptional interpersonal and organizational expertise and an capability to interact effectively with a wide array of stakeholders including faculty, staff, students, university personnel and the general public. The position requires expertise of department and university policies and a high level of proficiency with budget processes and technology systems.

Specific tasks connected with the position include the following:

• Serves as the department's budget manager, including purchases of equipment and supplies and oversight of spending and fund balances in state operating, foundation, and external grant accounts.

• Works with the unit administrator and personnel committee to hold searches to fill EHRA and SHRA vacancies and prepares paperwork for new temporary and permanent faculty and staff hires.

• Administers faculty research grants, including budgeting, effort reporting and student employment.

• Handles submissions for faculty and student travel and prepares and processes travel permissions and reimbursements.

• Supervises the activities of, and prepares evaluations for, two SHRA staff members.

• Serves as liaison for the department to other units on campus, and as initial point of contact and troubleshooter-in person, by phone or via e-mail-for inquiries and concerns from diverse internal and external constituencies.

• Other tasks as required to manage the department office and assist the unit administrator in support of the Department's teaching, research and service mission.
