Position Summary Information

Job Summary/Basic Function: About this function:
The Academic Counselor for the Texas Academy provides comprehensive academic guidance and support to high-achieving high school students enrolled in the Texas Academy. Reporting to the Dean of the Honors College/Director of the Texas Academy, this position collaborates with faculty, staff, and students to promote academic success and retention. The Counselor assists students in navigating academic pathways, monitors their progress, and addresses any academic challenges they may face. Additionally, the function involves facilitating academic advising, coordinating academic records, and supporting students' transition to college life. The Counselor also serves as a liaison with university departments and participates in student engagement activities, including orientations and workshops.

What You'll Do - Position Job responsibilities:
Academic Counseling, Advising, and Student Programming

   » Provides academic advising to students and consultation to parents, faculty, and administrators regarding academic matters. Counsels' students as they navigate their academic pathway and/or practice academic difficulties.
   » Tracks students all over their academic careers to promote academicprogress, generating progress and semesterly reports.
   » Assists with registration of incoming, first-year students and other academic needs.
   » Assists in planning and executing new student orientation and student engagement programs.

Record Management and Reporting
   » Manages student records, including maintaining a database of advisement and retention communications with professors.
   » Utilizes systems for appointments, communication, and reporting on student progress. ·
   » Serves as district testing coordinator, handling end-of-course (EOC) and PSAT exams.
Student Engagement and Transition Support
   » Develops plans for the mental and emotional well-being of students transitioning to the college practice.
   » Provides guidance and holds workshops for students transitioning to Lamar University and other colleges.
Liaison and Collaboration
   » Serves as a liaison between the Honors College and Texas Academy, collaborating with colleges, departments, programs, majors, and learning communities.
   » Engages with the university community to support student success initiatives.
Marketing and Promotion
   » Assists with marketing and promoting Texas Academy programs and services.
   » Engages in recruitment efforts to attract new students.
Professional Development and Other tasks
   » Attends activities/events outside normal business hours and participates in professional development as needed.
   » Performs other tasks as assigned.

Key Competencies:
   » Knowledge of student success best practices in academic advising and student development. · Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Excel and Word.
   » High level of organization, strong attention to detail, and interpersonal skills. ·
   » Familiarity/knowledge of Texas Education Agency (TEA) regulations and graduation requirements.
   » knowledge of university advising practices to meet students' needs.
   » capability to work collaboratively in a team environment and with individuals from various backgrounds.
   » Professionalism in representing Lamar University.
Physical Requirements:

Job Conditions:
   » This position operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers. The function may occasionally require travel to attend meetings or events and could involve working outside regular hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet student counseling and university needs. The Counselor must manage a student-centered environment, handle crisis situations, and support various student populations while adhering to confidentiality regulations (HIPAA, FERPA).

Minimum Appropriate qualifications:
   » Master's degree or master's degree in progress in a related field from an accredited college or university.
   » Three years of practice within an academic setting, advising, counseling, data collection, and analysis.
   » Previous practice (1-3 years) in academic advising, student support functions, or related areas at the high school or college level.
