This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Instrument Technologist- Mechanical: Research Design and Fabrication Specialist position for the Water Engineering Research Lab at Oregon State University-Cascades.

This is a limited duration appointment expected to last approximately 9 months from the appointment begin date.

The position of Research Systems Design and Fabrication Specialist plays a crucial function within the university's water engineering research lab. Tasked with designing and fabricating experimental facilities, this specialist contributes significantly to the advancement of desalination, lithium extraction, and wastewater technologies. Operating within the context of the university's commitment to cutting-edge research, the specialist is responsible for innovating components, managing lab safety, and superviseing the efficient execution of experiments. this function is integral to achieving program objectives in water engineering and aligns with the broader goals of the university's research initiatives. The Research Design and Fabrication Specialist functions at the intersection of engineering, research, and project management, contributing directly to the success of the lab's programs and projects.

What We Require
Five years of instrument shop practice designing, fabricating, and maintaining precision mechanical scientific and/or medical instruments, equipment, and systems. The practice must include responsibility for equipment and instrument design with minimum (general) supervision and indicate the capability to serve as a technical resource person to other instrument technicians and related personnel; AND One of the following: Completion of a Machinist Apprenticeship program; or An Associate's degree in either Mechanical Engineering Technology or Machine (Manufacturing) Technology; or A Bachelor's degree with major courses in mechanical engineering or a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule Working Conditions: The position primarily operates within a laboratory environment, requiring hands-on work in experimental facilities related to water engineering research. The specialist may be exposed to dust, gas, fumes, sparks, steam, and chemicals; personal protective equipment required. While the function involves some desk work for tasks such as 3D modeling and data processing, the majority of the work occurs in a non-traditional office setting.

Physical Requirements: The function may involve lifting and manipulating materials weighing up to 100lbs during fabrication, as well as standing for extended periods while conducting experiments. The specialist should be comfortable working with a variety of materials, including metals and plastics. Attention to lab safety standards is essential, and the specialist may need to traverse uneven or rugged terrain within the laboratory setting.

Travel: While not a primary aspect of the function, occasional travel may be required for conferences, project research, or to attend significant workshops or training sessions.
