Position Summary Information

Position Summary: Austin Peay State University invites applications for a full-time adjunct Professor of Music to serve as the Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands. The prosperous candidate will supervise all aspects of the Athletic Band program, teach the Governors Own Marching Band, the Basketball Pep Band, conduct the Symphonic Band, and teach other courses within the department according to the qualifications of the candidate and the needs of the department. This is a 9-month tenure-track faculty position commencing August 1, 2024. income is commensurate with practice and education. Teaching release time and stipend are included.

The Athletic Band program at Austin Peay is defined by three ensembles: a) The Governors Own Marching Band - comprised of brass, woodwinds, color guard, drumline, and stationary percussion. The ?GOMB? performs at all home football games, select away games, community events, parades and exhibition performances; b) The Basketball Pep Band, which performs at Men's and Women's home basketball games, as well as post-season tournaments. Home basketball games are held in a brand new 7,000 seat arena in downtown Clarksville; c) The GO Band, a 20-member scholarship ensemble which performs at special events for our campus and community.

The Department of Music at Austin Peay State University, an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music, enjoys a vital presence on campus, in the Clarksville community, and in the region. The Department boasts a nationally recognized and acoustically superior concert hall, along with outstanding performance, practice, rehearsal, and studio spaces. The Department of Music is an integral member of the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts (CECA https://apsu.edu/ceca/). A long-established state-funded initiative, CECA is designed to enhance the cultural environment of the university, community, and region through a diverse range of imaginative arts practices. The following degrees are offered: Bachelor of Music with concentrations in Performance, Music Education, Composition, and Music Therapy; Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Music; Master of Music with concentrations in Music Education, Performance, Collaborative Piano, Instrumental Conducting, and Choral Conducting.

Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. Primary tasks and Job responsibilities: The prosperous candidate will:
   » Direct all aspects of the APSU Athletic Band program.
   » Schedule, supervise, and conduct rehearsals and performances for all athletic band activities including, but not limited to: home and away football and basketball games, football and basketball post-season games, parades, exhibitions, and other events as requested by administration.
   » Supervise all administrative aspects of athletic bands including, but not limited to: financial management, facilities reservations, and purchase/supervision of equipment, instruments, music, and uniforms.
   » Demonstrated capability to compose music arrangements and visual design (?drill?)
   » Identify, hire, and supervise supplemental instructors (color guard, percussion) and/or music and visual designers for the Marching Band.
   » Supervise student employees assigned to athletic bands (graduate adjuncts, scholarship workers, work study, etc).
   » Schedule, facilitate, and teach Fall pre-semester rehearsals (?band camp?).
   » Facilitate annual Athletic Band events including: a high school marching band competition hosted by APSU, high school band day, alumni band, and banquet.
   » Maintain, build, and improve all aspects of the athletic band program at APSU.
   » Direct the APSU Symphonic Band in all rehearsals and performances.
   » Teach courses appropriate to specialization. Courses may include: Marching Band Techniques, Secondary Instrumental Methods, supervision of student teachers, applied lessons, music theory, aural expertise, jazz, music appreciation, etc.
   » Serve as Associate Director of the annual Governors Honor Festival, an invitational honor band/orchestra event, including planning for and facilitating the event.
   » Coordinate with the Director of Bands on aspects of all band activities at APSU.
   » Actively recruit for the University, the Music Department, and the Athletic Bands, including but not limited to: Coordinate and develop recruiting events, schedule and supervise tours with prospective students.
   » Facilitate academic advising for undergraduate and graduate students.
   » Collaborate with the other areas in the Music Department; with other departments across campus; and with area musicians and music educators.
   » Build and maintain positive and professional relationships with the region's high school band directors and students.
   » Engage in significant professional, scholarly creative, and service activities.
   » Actively participate in significant professional organizations.
   » Maintain an active and continuing recruiting agenda on behalf of the music department.
   » Serve on faculty committees.
   » Perform other job-related tasks as assigned.

   » Master's degree in music required.
   » Must have earned one degree in Music Education (Bachelor's or Master's)
   » Minimum three years of full-time teaching practice at the K-12 level.
   » Demonstrated practice in athletic bands.
   » Demonstrated practice as a concert band conductor.
   » A background search will be required of the prosperous applicant.
Preferred Qualifications (above the minimum):
   » Earned doctorate in Conducting or Music Education.
   » Significant athletic band, and/or drum corps practice.
   » Collegiate teaching practice.
   » Strong record of recruiting, professional activity, and research activities.
