Position Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one Summer 2024 Hort Field position for the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University (OSU).

The undergraduate student will assist with laboratory, greenhouse, and field work in weed management in vegetable and specialty seed crops. Responsibilities include assisting with experiment instillation, data collection, maintenance, outreach material related to research. Field activities may be on-campus (lab and greenhouse), on the OSU Vegetable Farm (three miles east of the OSU main campus) or off-campus sites. Employee must have a driver's license. Activities include working with pesticides, farm equipment, and inclement weather when outdoors.

Position tasks 70% Research farm work
   » Maintaining equipment clean and ready to use when needed. Assist with field plot maintenance. Recording data. Working with field equipment and power tools.

15% Greenhouse work
   » Assist with filling pots with soil, seeding, transplanting, labeling, and moving potted plants around. Recording data.

10% Lab work
   » Maintaining a clean and ready to use lab when needed. Washing dishware, labeling, and refilling supplies. Recording data. Lab is in Ag and Life Sciences Bldg.

5% Computer work
   » Data entry using Excel and other programs. Use of MS Office programs for recording data or other tasks.
   » No previous research practice is required, but Information technology is beneficial.

   » Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
   » Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
   » Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
   » High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
   » Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
   » Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
   » Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
   » Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered ?full-time? by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
   » capability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
   » Must be able to stand, kneel and lift up to 25-50 lbs
   » Interest and expertise in weed science, horticulture, crop science, agriculture.
   » Good communication expertise. capability to follow directions, apply accuracy and attention to details in all tasks.
   » Preference may be given to candidates with previous practice working with field equipment.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
   » May include operating power tools and hand tools.
   » Work outdoors in all types of weather.
   » May require walking, standing, bending, and stooping for extended periods.
   » May be exposed to dust, fumes, noise, and variation in temperature.
   » May require maneuvering and transporting heavy objects, up to 50 lbs)
   » Working around chemicals, paint, fertilizers. Lab and farm safety procedures are followed. Personal protective equipment is provided.
   » While school is in session may work up to 20 hours/week. Availcapability is flexible upon the individual's class schedule. In the summer, the student may work up to 40 hours/week.
