Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill future full-time, part-time, short-term, and temporary Seed Analyst 1 positions in the Department of Crop & Soil Science - Seed Lab at Oregon State University (OSU).

The OSU Seed Lab provides quality control information to the seed industry for purposes of marketing and shipping domestically and/or internationally, according to the seed labeling requirements of the Federal Seed Act (FSA). The Seed Lab's customers are from Oregon, across the United States, and internationally. They include seed growers, cleaners, dealers, participants of the Oregon Seed Certification program, Oregon Department of Agriculture, researchers, private companies, individuals and other various programs. After submitting a seed sample for testing, customers receive a Report of Analysis. Customers use the information to make business decisions in regards to marketcapability, seed value, sales, importing and exporting that affect the Oregon, national and global economies.

The Oregon Seed Certification Service (OSCS) seed samples are tested by the OSU Seed Lab. The Laboratory also serves the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) and other government agencies by conducting regulatory testing and provides technical support to OSU and to the general public in numerous ways. The Laboratory provides technical training in the form of seed schools and workshops to various groups in Oregon, other states and countries.

The OSU Seed Lab is a member of the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA), an official Lab recognized by the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and accredited by the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA). The Lab and Seed Analysts incumbent participate in Referee testing for AOSA, CFIA, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Proficiency Testing for AOSA and ISTA. The OSU Seed Laboratory enjoys national and international acclaim as a leader in seed identification and testing procedures along with these memberships and accreditations, which is a direct reflection of the breadth and depth of expertise and practice of the Seed Analysts at the OSU Seed Lab.

This purpose of the incumbent is a representative of the OSU Seed Lab Purity Testing program. They will support and independently conduct and record the final seed testing analysis, including but not limited to the visual purity exam, bulk, all states noxious exam, crop and weed exam, sod quality exam, undesirable grass seed exam and other seed determination on the most common grass species: tall fescue, ryegrass, orchardgrass, fine fescue and other less complex species for non-certified, Certified and ISTA samples.

The incumbent uses working comprehensive specialty expertise of the Laboratory policy and specific standards set by State and Federal law, USDA standards, Canadian (CFIA) Methods and Procedures (M&P), European Economic Community Standards (EC Standards), the ISTA rules, and standards and rules set by the AOSA and Society of Commercial Seed Technologists (SCST). The incumbent keeps current with the standards, procedures and rules as changes are made. The incumbent is familiar with and able to identify and classify the most common crop kinds (mentioned above) and contaminants within the scope of the Lab's accreditations.

The incumbent continually studies the AOSA, SCST, ISTA Rules, CFIA M&P for testing seeds, as well as the OSCS, ODA and EC Standards. They use the Lab's broad seed herbarium as well as create their personal herbarium to develop their skill and build their expertise of seed identification. The incumbent has expertise of the common and scientific names of seed species and keeps up with the continual updating of classification and name changes made by USDA, AOSA and ISTA.

The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that the purity seed analysis data is accurate according to the seed sample and seed testing procedures, policies and rules. The purity seed testing results are recorded by this incumbent on electronic records in conclusion to the identification of the pure seed and inert matter; the identification and classification of other seeds, including applicable noxious or prohibited weed seeds, undesirable weed seeds, sod quality contaminants, or other contaminants located on seed testing rules, international import requirements and customer requests. These results require a high degree of decisions located on the visual inspection of the purity testing and the seed testing procedures, policies and rules.

The incumbent functions as part of a team to advance the training of junior analysts. When necessary, this position assists with training of temporary and classified employees to conduct the initial separation on the most common species in preparation for purity seed testing. They contribute to and lead lectures and classes on purity testing and seed identification for junior seed analysts and even the public for community outreach and education.
The incumbent will use, adjust, maintain and complete minor repairs of the purity testing equipment. The incumbent will self-manage, make decisions, troubleshoot issues and collaborate with others from the OSU Seed Lab Purity Testing program as well as with outside Purity Testing professionals. The Lab works at a fast pace especially during the peak harvest season to keep up with the work load and turnaround time expectations.

Key Responsibilities 55%Independently performs purity seed testing exams on fescues, ryegrass, orchardgrass and other less complex species. Performs examinations including but not limited to, purity, bulk, noxious weed, crop and weed, sod quality, undesirable grass seed, other seed determination, pest and disease, soil exams and searches for other contaminants as requested by the customer. Visually examines predetermined amounts of seed for the presence of contaminants with the use of the Ergovision System, purity board or other acceptable forms of magnification. Independently identifies contaminants using microscope, seed identification plates and keys, online seed identification resources, and the Seed Lab's official seed herbarium. Records contaminants and other analysis information in correct format on the Laboratory electronic record, verifying all information has been recorded correctly. Uses working expertise of standard seed testing rules and special requirements for Oregon Certified Seed, and through consultation of state (ODA), national (AOSA), or international (ISTA or Candian) seed testing rules, follows correct testing procedures to meet customer testing needs. Submits completed electronic record with test results to the weigh station and communicates any anomalies to the manager.

15% Trains junior analysts as part of a team, teaching to identify seeds by indicating any morphological features that aid in seed identification. Assists in teaching junior analysts to execute purity and related analyses through coaching and emphasizing how to apply and follow AOSA, ISTA and Canada testing rules, Australian, EC and other international import requirements. Reviews all components of the junior analysts' test results as part of the QMS. Consults with the junior analysts on feedback for improvement an any unusual or intricate findings. Keeps manager informed on training progress.

15% Other tasks: May prepare samples by dividing, blowing, and/or screening, or by weighing and calculating final purity results if needed, as assigned by manager. May process seed image requests from customers using a microscope camera and connected software. May interact with Lab guests when requested to demonstrate and explain what they do during Lab tours or workshops. Helps to update the Official Lab Herbarium as well as other small herbariums held with the Lab. Assist in other areas of the Laboratory, as needed.

10% Studies and Trains to execute the initial separation of more complex seed species including, but not limited to bluegrass, bentgrass, wheatgrass, native and other difficult-to-test species while following the testing rules and procedures. Also studies and trains to improve individual skill level on testing of all seeds and more complex examinations. Studies seed identification to broaden individual expertise base, creates and maintains a personal seed herbarium collection used for reference and training purposes. Assists with hiring new and temporary junior analysts by serving on hiring committees, which may entail reviewing applications, scheduling and conducting interviews and performing job orientations.

5%Maintains cleanliness of personal workstations, sample preparations areas and other areas of the laboratory to avoid possible cross contamination of samples and to maintain the professional image of the laboratory. Equipment inventory, maintenance and repair.

What We Require
One year of full-time practice performing purity, germination, or special tests on seeds such as Bluegrass and Bentgrass seeds and training providing the expertise of AOSA or SCST rules for testing seeds; OR a certificate of competency in seed testing from either AOSA or SCST.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule The incumbent will spend the majority of their time in a sitting position at a purity board or ergovision station, looking at seeds through a lighted magnifying lens, and using forceps to manipulate/move seeds (repetitive motion). Some work will be performed operating equipment to separate seeds and will require some sitting, standing and lifting up to 20lbs. The work schedule is Monday through Friday with fluctuating hours depending on sample load. The schedule is full-time and most busy during the months of July through February. This position occasionally involves working around fumes, odors, dust, noise, and pesticide chemicals in a laboratory setting.
