Job Summary The Department of Horticulture invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, tenure/tenure-track adjunct, Associate or Full Professor position.

This endowed professorship for hazelnut breeding position contributes to the research and resident instruction missions of the department. The position provides leadership abilities for the breeding of hazelnut varieties for the Oregon hazelnut industry. The program integrates traditional breeding with advanced genetic and genomic tools to deliver new cultivars. The position contributes to the instruction of undergraduate and graduate students in plant breeding and advises graduate students in breeding of hazelnuts. This position is supported in part by endowment funds; thus, Information technology is recognized as the Oregon Hazelnut Industry Endowed Professorship in the Department of Horticulture.

This position will be a tenure-track or tenured position at the rank of adjunct Professor, Associate Professor, or Full Professor. Key Responsibilities 75% Research, scholarship, and outreach
Develop new hazelnut cultivars with the goal of enhancing the competitive position of Willamette Valley growers, processors, and handlers on the national and world market, thereby improving the livelihood of Oregon's hazelnut industry. Identify appropriate pollinizers for production cultivars. Evaluate susceptibility of hazelnut cultivars and selections to eastern filbert blight.

Collaborate nationally and internationally to play an active function in the worldwide hazelnut industry. Be aware of worldwide markets and production trends in order to take advantage of new methods and germplasm to develop cultivars that expand market potential for Oregon hazelnuts.

Conduct collaborative hazelnut genetic research with CAS faculty and with the USDA National Clonal Germplasm Repository (NCGR). Collaborate on development of genome resources for implementation of marker-assisted selection with the goal of accelerating breeding for disease resistance and other desirable traits, including production and post-harvest quality. Apply these tools in the development of new cultivars.

Serve as an investigator on a USDA-NIFA Hatch collaborative or Hatch multistate project.
Communicate research results and information to, and seek input from, stakeholders such as the Oregon Hazelnut Commission (OHC), Hazelnut Variety Advisory Committee (HVAC) and Nut Growers Society (NGS) through presentations at grower meetings, articles in grower newsletters, and small group and personal interactions with nurseries, growers, and handlers. Collaborate with other OSU faculty engaged in hazelnut production research and extension.

Scholarship and creative activity includes the discovery of new expertise concerning genetic diversity in hazelnut, genetic control of traits, breeding methods, and development of new cultivars. Communication of expertise will be through refereed journal articles and presentations at scientific meetings and congresses, as well as through contributions to hazelnut extension publications as appropriate. Scholarship will be validated by peer review.
Research and outreach require driving to and from OSU greenhouse facilities, field sites, laboratories, and other facilities on and off the Corvallis Campus.

10% Teaching
Annually teach Plant Breeding (PBG 450/550).
Teach in alternate years a graduate-level course in a specialized area of plant breeding. Currently this course is Breeding Clonal Crops (1 credit), taught in even-numbered years. Another option is Temperate Tree Fruit, Berries, Grapes, and Nuts (2 credits).
Contribute to guest lectures to other courses as appropriate
Advise graduate students and serve on graduate committees.

10% Supervision
Supervise graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, research associates, and/or faculty research adjuncts.

5% Service
Participate in department faculty meetings, committees, and other activities as appropriate. Serve on experiment station, college, and university committees as appropriate. Serve as a technical advisor to the USDA National Clonal Germplasm Repository in Corvallis. Serve and provide leadership abilities in professional societies such as American Society for Horticultural Sciences by reviewing manuscripts and other appropriate activities.

   » PhD in Horticulture, Plant Breeding, or related field at the time of appointment.
   » practice in plant breeding.

   » Evidence of a high potential for teaching excellence. Evidence could include completion of a college teaching certificate program.
   » Evidence of a high potential for obtaining sustained extramural funding and publication in various aspects of plant breeding and genetics.
   » Demonstrated capability to work with industry in terms of partnerships, collaborations, sponsored programs, or in other ways.
   » Proven oral and written communication expertise.
   » Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications, and strong scientific writing and technical presentation expertise.
   » Potential for obtaining sustained extramural funding and publication in various aspects of plant breeding and genetics.
   » This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
   » This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
