Primary Purpose of Department Along with BS and MS programs in Physics, the Physics and Optical Science Department offers PhD and MS programs in Optical Science and Engineering, with approximately 50 PhD students enrolled. There are excellent experimental facilities available in fabrication and metrology through UNC Charlotte's Center for Optoelectronics and Optical Communications and UNC Charlotte's Center for Precision Metrology. UNC Charlotte is actively involved in multiple NSF-sponsored Industry-University Collaborative Research Centers, serving as the lead institution for the Center for Metamaterials and the co-lead institution of the Center for Freeform Optics. Both Centers provide frameworks for close collaborations with industry partners and government labs on applied research projects.

Primary Purpose of Position This position will support efforts in precision and ultraprecision CNC machining at UNC Charlotte, with a particular focus on optical components and systems. The selected candidate will be an integral member of a diverse team of faculty, students, and staff that will support the development and execution of manufacturing processes, supervise/perform the setup of machines and the fabrication of high precision components, provide recommendations and input, located on fabrication capabilities and best practices, interpret customer specifications and requirements and collect and document necessary information and data generated during the fabrication process, and work with team members to tackle tough engineering challenges.

Summary of Position Responsibilities
   » Support/perform the manufacturing of optical components using ultraprecision CNC machining systems, such as the Moore Nanotech 650FG.
   » Support the machining of supporting hardware and tooling, including mounts and fixtures, utilizing CNC and/or manual machining methods and systems
   » Develop and document machining processes and techniques through the creation of procedures and manuals.
   » Review mechanical drawings for geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing and manufacturcapability.
   » Troubleshoot machine hardware, controller, and software. Interface with equipment manufacturers as needed to deal with issues.
   » Function as a team member and/or team leader on focused projects.
   » Support the estimating process for new projects.
Minimum Education/practice
   » BS degree in Materials, Mechanical, Optical or related Engineering field. A degree from an ABET- accredited university is preferred. Degree must be obtained by date of hire.
   » Substantial practice with manual and CNC machining such as lathes, mills, presses, etc.
   » practice in precision single-point diamond turning.
   » practice in surface metrology of machined components.
   » capability to fully read and understand mechanical drawings, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
   » Excellent attention to detail, communication, and interaction expertise.
   » Able to handle multiple complex tasks and set priorities.
   » Able to collaborate across organizational boundaries.
Preferred Education, expertise, expertise and practice
   » A degree from an ABET- accredited university is preferred.
   » Mechanical design, such as AutoCad Inventor, PTC Creo, Siemens NX, Solidworks, or related products.
   » expertise of reflective and refractive optics and their manufacture.
   » Multi-axis, precision machine tool expertise and programming expertise.
   » Process development practice.
