Position Summary This project finds new woodpecker nests via forest exploration and tracks their use by cavity nesting birds and mammals. The purpose of the research is to document the interdependence of primary cavity nesting species (i.e. birds like nuthatches and woodpeckers that excavate cavities) and secondary cavity nesters (i.e. other birds and mammals) that use the holes subsequently. The crew leader will be expected to organize workers and equipment, train workers, and compile data.
Anticipated hourly wage $20.00.

Position tasks
   » Locate nesting trees using GPS.
   » Assess presence/absence for nest occupancy using a cavity camera or other techniques.
   » Accurately identify bird or mammal species present.
   » Record data according to protocol. The crew leader will be expected to organize workers and equipment, train workers, and compile data.

   » Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
   » Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
   » Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
   » High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
   » Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
   » Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
   » Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
   » Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered ?full-time? by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications practice identifying birds and small mammals of Central Oregon. capability to operate and repair various models of tree cavity cameras. practice with Microsoft Excel. Past practice leading and training undergraduate research crews. Familiarity with Forest Service habitat in the Sisters Ranger District. capability to walk moderate distances off trail. Access to a vehicle for commuting to study sites near Camp Sherman, OR.
