Min Hourly Rate $14.20 (Standard); $13.20 (Non-Urban); $15.45 (Portland Metro) Max Hourly Rate $21.00 (Standard); $18.50 (Non-Urban); $21.50 (Portland Metro) Position Summary This project finds new woodpecker nests via forest exploration and tracks their use by cavity nesting birds and mammals. The purpose of the research is to document the interdependence of primary cavity nesting species (i.e. birds like nuthatches and woodpeckers that excavate cavities) and secondary cavity nesters (i.e. other birds and mammals) that use the holes subsequently. The crew leader will be expected to organize workers and equipment, train workers, and compile data. Anticipated hourly wage $20.00. Position tasks » Locate nesting trees using GPS. » Assess presence/absence for nest occupancy using a cavity camera or other techniques. » Accurately identify bird or mammal species present. » Record data according to protocol. A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center. Additional Required Qualifications practice identifying birds and small mammals of Central Oregon. capability to operate and repair various models of tree cavity cameras. practice with Microsoft Excel. Past practice leading and training undergraduate research crews. Familiarity with Forest Service habitat in the Sisters Ranger District. capability to walk moderate distances off trail. Access to a vehicle for commuting to study sites near Camp Sherman, OR.
