The Office of Academic Affairs is seeking a Director of Difference, Power, and Oppression Program. This is a part-time (0.50 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.


The Difference, Power, and Oppression (DPO) Program contributes to the university's social justice efforts by working with faculty across all disciplines to create inclusive curricula that address intersections of gender, race, class, sexual identity, age, capability, and other institutionalized systems of inequity and privilege in the United States. DPO is recently renamed from Difference, Power, and Discrimination-a program existing at OSU for 30 years.

DPO courses are a part of the University's Core Education curriculum and as such, all OSU undergraduate students complete a minimum number of DPO credits (through two courses) as part of fulfilling their general education requirements. In addition to providing faculty with educational opportunities and resources to enable the re-visioning of course content and classroom practices, such that issues of difference, power, and oppression are addressed, the DPO Director contributes to fostering a community within OSU where faculty, students, and staff can gain in-depth knowledge of social inequities and be empowered to contribute to the continuing transformation of OSU in service of institutional inclusivity and equity.

This 0.5 FTE (professional faculty) appointment serves as the Director of the DPO Program within Academic Affairs (AA), while the other half (0.50 FTE) is directed toward teaching, research, scholarship, and service in an academic unit appropriate for the education, training, and skills of the selected applicant. This document reflects the Office of Academic Affairs FTE, professional faculty portion. The DPO position is a rotating appointment, and the incumbent is anticipated to serve a three-year term, which may be renewed.

The university is in the midst of installing a new general education curriculum, called Core Education. Core Education has foundational elements, which include a lower division DPO course (DPO foundations), and signature elements, which include an upper division DPO course (DPO advanced). In addition, this curriculum recognizes the value of aligning with Oregon's Core Transfer Map - which facilitates seamless transfer among Oregon higher education institutions and creates a distinctive and high-quality foundation for OSU's degree offerings.

The Office of Academic Affairs works to promote and improve the quality of academic programs and student success at Oregon State University, critical elements of the university's strategic plan. Within AA, DPO program staff offer skills and support to meet the needs of all faculty. The DPO Program Director collaborates closely with colleges, schools, departments, and faculty to implement discipline-tailored curricula informed by current research and oriented toward exposing students in DPO courses to high-impact learning practices.

The DPO Director supervises the adjunct Director for DPO (a 12-month administrative appointment). Together the Director and adjunct Director work collaboratively with programs, departments, faculty, staff, Academic Affairs (AA), and the Core Education (currently called Baccalaureate Core) Director. The Director may supervise post doc, graduate students or undergraduate students to assist with program needs.

Key Responsibilities 85% leadership abilities and Oversight of the DPO Program
   » Responsible for leadership abilities and administration of the DPO Program.
   » Assist in the development and implementation of the DPO program's vision, goals, and programming agenda in collaboration with staff and stakeholders and in consultation with leadership abilities in AA.
   » Leads assessment of program results for the DPO program in collaboration with the Director of Assessment in AA
   » Participates in university committees and activities related to the DPO program, particularly as ex-officio member of the Faculty Senate's Baccalaureate Core Committee (soon to be renamed the Core Education Committee) and as a member of the Teaching and Learning team.
   » Reviews and enhances the DPO faculty seminars.
   » With the adjunct Director of DPO, teaches or directs the teaching of the DPO faculty seminars as needed in concert with the Core Education installation timeline and with program maintenance requirement.
   » Maintains a culture of continuous improvement by evaluating curriculum, faculty development, and issues related to student results and success.
   » Fosters a community within OSU where students and employees can address the foundations and maintenance of social inequalities and become empowered to contribute to the continuing transformation of institutional inclusivity and equity.

   » Manages budgetary resources of the program with assistance.
   » Supervises adjunct Director and connected GTA/GRA's or interns - hired as needed.
