Position Summary This recruitment will be used to fill approximately 12-15 part-time tutors (maximum of 10 hours per week) for the OSU Upward Bound Program at our six target schools in the following locations: Corvallis, Albany, Sweet Home, McMinnville, Hillsboro and Hood River.

Upward Bound Tutors work individually and with small groups of UB high school students to assist with their studies in Math (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus) Science (biology, chemistry, physics, and anatomy/physiology) and English/Writing over the course of the term (week 2 through week 10) to help them better understand course material and prepare for assignments and exams. We are seeking for one tutor in each of the academic areas, but individuals who can work in two or more fields are preferred.

In addition to helping students with course content, tutors share study strategies and demonstrate methods for how students can find the answers for themselves, with the goal that through tutoring, UB students build the expertise that will enable them to practice greater academic success and excel in their classes.

Position tasks
   » Tutor Upward Bound students individually or in small groups and conduct tutoring sessions in designated areas for scheduled time slots.
   » Serves as an academic resource to students by helping them understand, apply, and complete course content and assignments while modeling prosperous student activities.
   » Maintain all records required to document student's attendance and academic progress.
   » Serve as mentors, and act as function models to fellow Upward Bound participants.
   » Chaperone field trips and/or assist with postsecondary workshops when available.
   » Assist at quarterly study sessions and student/parent orientation sessions.
   » Group and individual meetings with manager.

   » Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
   » Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
   » Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
   » High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
   » Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
   » Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
   » Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
   » Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered ?full-time? by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

   » A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above
   » Work study preferred
   » practice tutoring or mentoring students (paid or unpaid)
   » Current or past TRiO, CAMP, EOP or LSAMP enrollment/involvement
   » An knowledge of the UB student population (low-salary, potential first generation college students, or students who have a high risk of academic failure).
