North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island
Horticulture adjunctThis is an hourly, 11-month position. Information technology is classified as temporary/part-time and does not include state benefits. Schedule will be set upon hire. Up to 40 hours per week. Occasional weekend/holiday work may be required for this position.
Description of Work :
Primary tasks for this position include supporting the Conservation Horticulturist in all aspects of the everyday care, maintenance, and long-term planning of the existing gardens and plant collections, and installation of new landscaping. The Horticulture adjunct must possess the initiative and confidence to work with a minimum of direct supervision. They must have excellent communication expertise and the flexibility to adapt the everyday workload to changing outdoor conditions.
The position will perform the following essential functions under the supervision of the Curatorial staff and the Conservation Horticulturist:
» Care and maintenance of plants (including watering, weeding, mulching, planting, pruning, and pruning) in the following areas:
» existing gardens (Pollinator Garden, Rain Garden, and Carnivorous Plant Garden) and landscaped areas on the aquarium grounds
» interior plants in wetlands and freshwater exhibits
» new landscape installations
» seasonal planters and exhibits
(in addition, cleaning and organization for the following areas:)
» container plant nursery
» Plant propagation including seeding, rooting, and transplanting, seed collection and cleaning, as well as the maintenance of seeding records
» Habitat restoration projects including removal of invasive plants and revegetation
» Maintain on site compost area
» Assist with rotation and placement of plants for indoor exhibits
» Maintenance, harvest, and delivery of enrichment and food plants for aquarium animals
» Assist with native plant sales
» Participating in formal and informal educational programming for visitors on topics related to horticulture such as sustainable gardening methods, plant id, and pollinators.
» Additional tasks as assigned.
This position will require work in hot, humid, cold, windy and wet outdoor conditions with exposure to biting/stinging insects. This position will require lifting heavy items (approximately 50 pounds), climbing ladders, walking and standing for extended periods of time, using a hand-pulled wagon/cart or wheelbarrow to transport supplies, using shovels or other tools to dig holes and prepare soil, bending, kneeling, squatting, reaching and crawling, and work at heights indoors. This position may require occasional weekend and holiday work. Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license.
